Metal Nerdism Vol. 10: BLOOD & STEEL - 20 EPIC-er METAL songs to make you raise a sword.

It's not the best ones or the greatest ones, even if a few of them are undeniable champions. It is the 20 EPIC-er METAL songs to make you raise a sword (or an axe... or a hammer) according to Crystal Logic. There is just ONE RULE: One song per band. We don't want to present a list with 20 songs written by Quorthon or the Shark.

by Andreas Andreou

It is said that there are no specific rules to define Epic Metal and even if the correct term is Epic Heavy Metal, there are still bands, albums and many songs that are simply Epic Metal. A few of them will be found below. So, what's Epic (Heavy) Metal? The number 1 song in the list below sums up everything but it is more. Lyrics are also a part of it. You know them, name it battles, warriors, fantasy, sword & sorcery, mythology (even folklore), historical events, ancient times, mostly things that offer escapism. Epic Metal though has also the deep and academic approach of modern bands such as Atlantean Kodex and their unique lyrical approach that gives to this so-called sub-genre a quality that requests a devotion in order to approach it and understand it. At the end of the day, Epic Metal can be something more than simple "escapism" and it doesn mean of course that you should go out in the streets wielding a sword!

Roots? Many. It is about bands but mainly songs, and also the visual aspect. The roots in the '70s heavy and rock don't have many differences than the ones of Power Metal, so let's just add songs like Rainbow's "Stargazer" and Ronnie James Dio lyrical approach, Black Sabbath's "Supertzar" and the galloping rhythm of "Children of the Grave", Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song", a few more '70s songs of Uriah Heep, Judas Priest, Rush and Scorpions, the imagery of cover arts from bands such as Dust (Hard Attack, 1972) and Molly Hatchet (Molly Hatchet, 1978), and this is just the top of the ice cube, since there were more less known bands here and there. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal leading to the '80s and Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell was the foundation upon which bands like Manilla Road and Manowar shaped part of their characteristics.

The first ones? I guess we all agree that bands such as Manilla Road, Manowar and Warlord can claim the "Epic Heavy Metal" term as the leaders without adding any "proto-metal", "proto-epic", "proto-whatever" this thing is, bands. When was this term firstly used? We will discuss it in the last songs of the list below.

A few diverse and controversial choices are a must sometimes, so the list goes like this:

20. BATTLEROAR - Hyrkanian Blades

For us, old fans of Battleroar the debate for the best album was always Age of Chaos or To Death and Beyond... but I was always with the later since there was one of the greatest epic heavy metal openers ever ("The Wrathforge") and songs like "Hyrkanian Blades". Huge band in the underground epic metal scene back then, but it was never the same after the third album. It was just a different act.

Check also: RAVENSIRE - Drawing the Sword

19. SOLSTICE - To Ride with Tyr

I am always trying to find ways so I can add something from Solstice in every list. This wasn't very difficult this time, so Mr. Rich Walker is here, with this epic (doom) metal masterpiece from Halcyon EP. "We die as brothers, and ride with Tyr".

Check also: ISEN TORR - Mighty & Superior

18. TWISTED TOWER DIRE - Axes & Honor

Taken from the third album of one of the best bands of the true new wave of traditional heavy metal movement that took shape a few years before bands like Enforcer led the way, "Axes & Honor" is a glorious anthemic epic heavy metal song. Grab an axe and held it high!

Check also: CRUSH - Kingdom of the Kings

17. DOMINE - The Aquilonia Suite

That song could be higher in the list but having also the music of Basil Poledouris heavily added it would be unfair for all the rest. Conan the Barbarian is the key element here and Domine more or less offer us their epic heavy metal take on the John Milius' film with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the leading role. Perfect from start to finish, the 11-minute epic is a highlight in Domine's impressive catalogue.

Check also: IRONSWORD - Cimmeria

16. CIRITH UNGOL - Nadsokor

"Mighty warrior raise your sword against the seething chaos horde" is the first line and the voice of chaos brings an archaic and mystical aura that only Cirith Ungol had in specific moments of their albums. One Foot in Hell is definitely not the best Ungol album (that one is King of the Dead for all of the older Ungol fans) but "Nadsokor" is one of their epic-er songs that's also has been covered in the debut album of the following band in No.15.

Check also: STONE DAGGER - The Siege of Jerusalem

15. DOOMSWORD - Heathen Assault

DoomSword is one more of the bands that can be labeled simply as "Epic Metal". They have the doom element in their music (and name) but this is just pure epic metal because playing slow metal music doesn't really make you doom metal. "Heathen Assault" sums up the essence of the band. The band's music is forged in tales of steel and battles, the triumph of the conqueror and the blood of the conquered.

Check also: BLOOD COVERED - Memories Through Centuries...

14. WRATHBLADE - God-Defying Typhoeus

Wrathblade is the most underrated epic heavy metal band ever. Everyone, more or less, has taken the credit it deserves but Wrathblade still haven't. Following the band from their early years and having seen them live numerous times (almost everywhere) before even releasing the debut album Into the Netherworld's Realm (2012), I was confident that this album was going to rule. And it did. The opening track "God-Defying Typhoeus" was a live favourite (just like "Reins of Doom") before even the album was released, among the few fanatics of the Athenian legion. A different kind of lyrics, epic but different and unique, the most suitable voice for their epic music, huge riffs and an excellent rhythm section, a lack of guitar solos and keyboards that adds an archaic and barbarian feeling, and the perfect production for their stuff. Wrathblade is the real epic heavy metal deal.

Check also: TALES OF MEDUSA - Bade the Myrmidons

13. ATLANTEAN KODEX - The Atlantean Kodex

There are many songs you can add here from Atlantean Kodex, but this anthemic epic heavy metal track is the hymn of the Kodex battalions and having seen live many times the German epic metal armada, it is also a live favourite. Atlantean Kodex is a very special epic metal band, the greatest one of the new era alongside Eternal Champion, but their approach differs and makes them really unique. It is the overall aesthetic element of the music, the lyrics, and the band's physical products. The band is already considered as one of the greatest in epic heavy metal and in the years to come, the new generations will view them as masters of their game. Still though, don't get fooled, the music of Atlantean Kodex is not a game, it is a form of art and at the same time, pure and regressive metal. Behold the fire, behold the force.

12. ETERNAL CHAMPION - I Am the Hammer

What Eternal Champion did with The Armor of Ire is bring back the way one album could change the scene instantly. That was the underground metal scene of course, but it really changed. Instantly. It was the moment where people thought "I can do that, too!". No one really did it so far but many tried. Others failed, others came close but still to this day, Eternal Champion stands as the greatest modern epic heavy metal band. A band with a songwriting and sound that influenced many and brought back to the USA a new generation of fans wanting traditional metal. The album's opening track "I Am the Hammer" is a modern totemic epic metal monument.

Check also: SMOULDER - Ilian of Garathorm

11. LORDIAN GUARD - War in Heaven

"And lo, Michael with sword in hand, he leads the Lordian Guard to slay, to damn"... that one, was the line that stuck in my head the first I listened to this song. It was during the pre-internet era where there was a rumor that "Bill Tsamis is coming back with Warlord". It wasn't Warlord though but the shock of listening to that album was one of the biggest in my life. It still has a very special place in my heart and adding blasphemy to the Christian themes Tsamis was dealing with back then in his lyrics, I listened more often to Lordian Guard than Warlord nowadays. Nothing really bothers me in Lordian Guard and I can't imagine those songs with another voice, arrangements, even "drums". "War in Heaven" is one of the greatest songs Tsamis ever wrote. And no, the version in Warlord's Rising Out of the Ashes is not a better one. The way William has added the keyboards in the Lordian Guard version is unmatchable and perfectly suitable with his guitars, plus Vidonne's theatrical voice sounds like descending from the sovereign sky forth God's command.

Check also: BLACK SWORD THUNDER ATTACK - Evil Sorcery

10. YNGWIE J. MALMSTEEN - I Am a Viking

Speaking of the roots of power metal, what Yngwie Malmsteen did with his first two albums, is one more of the most important steps to the evolution of the genre alongside the early years of Europe. And while in Sweden you have Heavy Load standing at the top of what we're talking about here, "I Am a Viking" is just a pure epic heavy metal masterpiece coming from one of the greatest albums ever made. When maestro Malmsteen was writing music for a line like "I'm a Viking, I'll walk all over you and by my sword you will die", he definitely felt like the ruler of this world. He probably still feels like that even if there aren't any vikings in Florida.

9. BROCAS HELM - Fly High

You can't understand Brocas Helm if you weren't raised with underground metal. And if you joined the epic heavy metal wagon and the underground scene in a later age during the social media, you still can't understand the true essence of underground metal. Sorry, but that's true. Brocas Helm is the ultimate underground metal band. It's not the best, but it's the essence of everything underground metal stands for. Among their catalogue, "Fly High" stands as the ultimate anthem of epic heavy metal with the insane opening lead and its galloping riff. The galloping riff, the riff that sounds like horses riding is one of the elements that makes a song "epic heavy metal" as long as it has the suitable lyrics too. There you go! You have another definition too!

Check also: STEEL ASSASSIN - Spartacus

8. RUNNING WILD - Conquistadores

Running Wild are mostly known for their pirate era, often labeled just as a Heavy Metal band but they really have played almost everything between heavy, speed, power and epic metal until the mid '90s with an unmatchable sequence of 10-rated-out-of-10 albums. And while their heavy metal from 1989 up to 1995 is more "power metal" than the majority of American bands labeled as such, they always had a few raise-fisting epic power metal hymns like "Conquistadores" with its anthemic chorus and the powerful leads that put to shame most of your favourite bands. If someone considers bands like Fifth Angel as "power metal", then Running Wild is ultra power metal. So what's our beloved German band? The ultimate soundtrack to hooliganism, one of the few bands that makes you raise your fist (and sword sometimes) in the air all the time and breaking stuff. Any kind of stuff. "Conquistadores" is an epic heavy metal hymn.

Check also: JAG PANZER - The Moors

7. VIRGIN STEELE - The Burning of Rome (Cry for Pompeii)

Often labeled as the bigger rival of Manowar in the '80s, Virgin Steele that decade didn't really have the "total" epic heavy metal album but they definitely had the songs! Released the same year with Manowar's Kings of Metal, Age of Consent didn't even come close but among a few others it had "The Burning of Rome (Cry for Pompeii)", one of the greatest Virgin Steele songs ever, coming from an uneven album that became better with its 1997 re-release and the addition of bonus material such as the "Perfect Mansions (Mountains of the Sun)" song. While David DeFeis' band met its bottom by entering the '90s with the album Life Among the Ruins and its suitable title, the following albums established them as one of the greatest American epic heavy metal bands. Still though, no one can deny that if you'll make a short list with the best Steele songs, there's a strong possibility most of them coming from the '80s, including the one mentioned here in the top.

Check also: BLACK KNIGHT - Warlord's Wrath

6. OMEN - Teeth of the Hydra

The 3-out-of-3-row-of-albums Battle Cry, Warning of Danger and The Curse is one of the greatest in the field of epic heavy and power metal. The excellent songwriting, the A-male voice of J.D. Kimball, the master riffing and the pounding rhythm section pretty much sum up that advert used to promote The Curse writing "Tired of bands that are better looking than your girlfriend? We have the answer: Omen. True Metal returns to L.A." Having once more the term "true metal" used since the '80s already, The Curse is the better sounding Omen album so far including also one of the best metal drum sounds ever, even if most of the people will give to one of the two previous ones the "best Omen album" tag. No argue with that. Still though, "Teeth of the Hydra" is one of the strongest candidates for "best Omen song". And you can't argue with that, too.

Check also: OVERLORDE - Keeper of the Flame

5. WARLORD - Deliver Us from Evil

There weren't so many metal musicians in the '80s so unique and talented like William J Tsamis. Since the early Warlord songs you always had a different kind of approach in melody and lyricism that's weird how it didn't create a legion of bands influenced by that style. A truly ahead-of-its-time guitarist and composer with an unmatchable guitar tone and style recognizable at once. Huge part of the Warlord's music was always drummer Mark Zonder too, something you can easily understand by listening to "Deliver Us from Evil", one of the most iconic Warlord songs, and Epic Heavy Metal in general.

4. MANILLA ROAD - The Veils of Negative Existence

Mark Shelton is one (if not The One) of the most important key figures of epic heavy metal. The third Manilla Road album Crystal Logic (1983) is one of the cornerstones of this so-called sub-genre and Manilla Road is the band responsible for all those epic (heavy) metal bands formed over the last 20 years. The line "I will never put my sword down, I will never run away" is so effective that stuck in your head for eternity from the very first moment. And every time you're listening to one of those classic '80s Manilla Road albums, you rediscover the essence of epic heavy metal. Mark Shelton was always a person that never stopped following the metal scene and always was listening to new bands and albums. From the early Rush-and-Sabbath influenced albums, to the Angel Witch and NWOBHM influence you can catch in Crystal Logic, the Shark never stopped breathing metal, just like that "Metal is dead so I've heard but not while I'm still above ground" line in "Dig Me No Grave" from 1990's The Courts of Chaos. Most bands that were changing in the history of metal music from 1980 onwards, were just getting "softer" and less aggressive, while Manilla Road (with the addition of drummer Randy Foxe) echoed the changes and were getting more aggressive leading to the almost-thrashy Out of the Abyss album of 1988. "The Veils of Negative Existence" is another mythical song in the band's catalogue, that became extremely influential for many bands, including the one you will see in Number 3...

3. CANDLEMASS - A Sorcerer's Pledge

Have you ever thought that the album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is probably the first official time where you see the origin of the term "Epic Metal"? This is definitely the birth of Epic Doom Metal (that wasn't widely used until the '90s) but most likely, it is also the moment when Epic Metal made its first appearance as a term. We're in 1986, Manowar have already started their "Death to False Metal" crusade and since there is "false metal", there's also "true metal" (whatever that means), right? The "true metal" term has also been used in metal magazines and fanzines in the mid '80s but has the term "epic metal" been used before 1986? Is it written anywhere?

We used to keep terms since their first appearance but sometimes this is blurry. For example, Possessed used the "Death Metal" term for their same-titled demo in 1984 and the "Death Metal" song also appears in the Seven Churches album of 1985, so we use to have this as a starting point but already in 1983, editor Bernard Doe of Metal Forces magazine writes, "Hellhammer take the meaning of Death Metal it its extreme" reviewing (burying actually) the Triumph of Death demo of Hellhammer. So, this term is already used. Might happened with Epic Metal too, but it wasn't widely used until Greek Metal Hammer's editor and shady character Charis "Sun Knight" Prasoulas started using that term and later it was spread from Greek metal fans influenced by his texts, around the globe through letters and tape trading, so after a while, you could see this term also used in Italy, Germany and more countries, leading to a whole new underground movement and later, even bands that described their music as "Epic Metal".

Candlemass' Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is the beginning of Epic Doom Metal, but the closing track "A Sorcerer's Pledge" can also be described as one of the greatest epic metal songs ever. A dramatic song separated in three parts. Starting with the acoustic first part that sets the atmosphere, the second epic part of "a tyrant that will conquer, so spoke the wise, of the day when the sorcerer will rise" and the third part that brings the atmosphere of the opening part with the exceptional use of keyboards and the ethereal female anthemic chanting sealing those ancient halls.

2. BATHORY - Song to Hall Up High / Home of Once Brave

There are many Bathory songs you can add here and even if we're talking about two tracks, this will always be one song. Quorthon has managed to shape different metal sub-genres and has been called innovator of both Black Metal and Viking Metal. But his "viking metal" is actually what we can call "Epic Metal" in its purest form. This is not epic heavy metal or epic black metal, this is just Epic Metal. He did it with his albums Hammerheart, Twilight of the Gods, Blood on Ice and both parts of Nordland. So, if viking metal nowadays is something you can call bands such as Amon Amarth, then Bathory is definitely something else, even if Quorthon created this sub-genre.

Music is a form of art. Art has many forms and ways of expression. Art can be a mirror of life, art can be escapism, art can just be the expression and feelings of the artist. The artist's will and/or need to express specific ideas, visions, feelings. And just like there are no boundaries in art, there are also no rules and/or guidelines of how an artist should express its art. Not everyone can understand that a few of the greatest forms of art were created through the feelings and the need the artist wanted to express. Art is not about only following a specific guideline of how you "must" sing, perform, write, paint, act, dance, paint, create. There is not only one way. And Quorthon was a unique artist that never really followed the way you "must" follow, that's why his art will remain forever, creating legions of bands and musicians influenced by him and the sub-genres he shaped. A true artist that surpassed his imperfections with a remarkable epic metal songwriting that breaks the boundaries of simple "songwriting" and becomes a wormhole to an age long gone.

Metal Nerdism Vol. 8: Top 10 (+1) drum sounds in metal music.

How many times have you listened to an album and besides each one's widely or personal reception, you recognize a specific element that sounds great? We don't want to write again about "great" singers or albums with the "best" guitars or the "best" solos, since there are probably many out there in magazines or the internet.

We're always trying to aim for something different, so this time we will present you a Top-10 (+1) of the greatest drum sounds in metal music according to Crystal Logic. A few of them can also be identified as albums you can also see in different "top" lists but note that we're not talking about best albums but about the best drum sound.

Still though, it is important to mention that besides the fact that a few of them were already in my mind as the "best", I revisited them again and in each album you can see the audio reference. What is most important is that these albums can only be listened in the physical format in order to feel and get the true magnificence of each one, and not in YouTube (even if we will add a link for a "glimpse") or torrents. After all, we need to mention that we're not taking seriously deep discussions about similar articles when the person in front of us is listening to music only through YouTube. It sounds elitistic but that's the truth, sorry.

1. Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom. Sathanas (1994)

Produced by Pytten. Drums performed and co-produced by Hellhammer. Mixed by Pytten, Hellhammer and Euronymous.

Besides its historical importance, Mayhem's first full-length album has a phenomenal and huge drum sound that is perfected by Hellhammer's supernatural performance. Grieghallen (Grieg Hall) is a concert hall located in Bergen, Norway and named after the composer Edvart Grieg. That facility also had recording rooms and a studio. Pytten’s "Grieghallen sound" is the analogue sound of Black Metal and he understood the "chaos" of those young musicians and what they had in mind. Hellhammer’s drums for De Mysteriis Dom. Sathanas were recorded on the main stage of the concert hall in order to catch that huge sound.

Read about the story of Black Metal and what led to the creation of De Mysteriis Dom. Sathanas.

Audio reference: Vinyl (Deathlike Silence 2020 pressing). In this anniversary vinyl box set, you can also find a book with all the recording information and the saga of the album.

2. King Diamond - Abigail (1987)

Produced by King Diamond. Assisted by Mikkey Dee and Michael Denner. Engineered by Roberto Falcao. Mixed by King Diamond, Andy La Rocque and Roberto Falcao. Drums performed by Mikkey Dee.

A bold and massive sound riding on reverb. Mikkey Dee's performance in Abigail can be identified as one of the greatest in heavy metal history and he recorded most of the album with just a specific part of the music so he could control what he wanted to put on with the less possible interference. Complex and at the same time exactly into-the-point, Mikkey's drumming and sound, added a huge part in the visionaire aura of Abigail, an album that is heavy metal, power metal, progressive metal, horror metal and everything in-between.

Audio reference: Vinyl (Roadrunner 1987 pressing), CD (Roadrunner 2005 deluxe edition), vinyl (Music On Vinyl 2014 pressing).

3. Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind (1983)

Produced, mixed and engineered by Martin Birch. Drums performed by Nicko McBrain.

While someone can say that Iron Maiden is the most iconic '80s heavy metal band, Martin Birch is also the ultimate metal producer of the '80s. Starting with Killers in 1981, he connected his name with the "Maiden-sound" and the greatest albums in the catalogue of the British legend. Piece of Mind, one of the albums that can be identified among the most important cornerstones of influence for what followed (including a huge part of US Power Metal), is heavily connected with THE metal drum sound. Similar to the previous and the next Iron Maiden albums, that sound is the essence of '80s heavy metal drum sound.

Audio reference: Vinyl (EMI 1983 pressing).

4. Omen - The Curse (1986)

Produced by Bill Metoyer and Omen. Engineered by Bill Metoyer. Drums performed by Steve Wittig.

The budget Omen used for most of their albums so far wasn't even close to the budget they had for the drums' recording only, of The Curse. And while Escape to Nowhere will always be an exception in their catalogue for many reasons (recording, too) in 1986 with Bill Metoyer on the sound, Kenny Powell and company recorded their best sounding album with that huge drum sound we surely miss nowadays with all those "same" modern metal triggered productions.

Audio reference: Vinyl (Metal Blade/Enigma 1986 pressing), CD (Metal Blade 1996 pressing w/Nightmares EP), vinyl (Metal Blade 2017 pressing).

5. Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (1986)

Recorded in Thunderload Studios, produced by Candlemass. Engineered and co-produced by Ragne Wahlquist. Drums performed by Mats Ekström.

"Heavy Load's rehearsal room/studio was filthy, remote and cold", Leif Edling wrote in the liner notes for the 2011 CD reissue adding, "but we chose it because Trilogy's and Yngwie Malmsteen's demos sounded just great". In the Behind the Wall of Doom massive 3CD+2DVD compilation, there is a 92-page book written by Per-Ola Nilsson including many interesting stories and facts about the recording of the greatest Epic Doom Metal album, and that's all you need to read. Sounding wise, the drum sound of Candlemass' iconic debut is a grand element of the album, a drum sound that is overlooked and lost over the years because of better productions. Still though, every time I am listening to this album, I can't ignore the fact that this sound is exactly what the greatest Doom Metal album ever needed.

Audio reference: Vinyl (Black Dragon 1986 pressing), CD (Peaceville 2011 pressing).

6. Savatage - Gutter Ballet (1989)

Produced by Paul O'Neill. Engineered by James A. Ball. Drums performed by Steve Wacholz.

What Paul O'Neill did for Savatage and how the band evolved through ups and downs, is one of the greatest chapters in metal music. And while you can read HERE a few interesting bits of this story, that huge and fat drum sound was probably something already set by O'Neill while he was experimenting with the Oliva brothers for the songwriting and performance. Still though, that (probably) easy set up of the drum sound within the Sava-camp remains an example of audio magnificence for most of their albums.

Audio reference: Vinyl (Atlantic 1989 pressing), CD (Atlantic 1989 pressing).

7. Queensrÿche - Empire (1990)

Produced by Peter Collins. Recorded and mixed by James Barton. Drums performed by Scott Rockenfield.

The multi-platinum album of Queensrÿche is the pinnacle of their commercial success but at the same time, it is one of those albums that can combine the commercial sound with artistic elegance. Scott Rockenfield's drumming is one of the elements that added uniqueness and character in 'rÿche's intelligent metal up to Promised Land. From the early years of "Queen of the Reich" up to 1990's "Another Rainy Night (Without You)" the sound of 'rÿche was evolving and changing adding more catchy parts and songs, losing its heaviness in some moments but never its quality, leading to the band's most self-confident album. Without being the band's best album, the production of Empire helped the album's songs and kept Queensrÿche's name high in the charts and the hard rock & metal scene during a period where '80s metal started sounding "outdated" according to media and trends.

Audio reference: Vinyl (EMI 1990 pressing), CD (EMI 1990 pressing).

8. Fates Warning - Parallels (1991)

Produced, recorded and mixed by Terry Brown. Drums and percussion by Mark Zonder.

While audio experts and engineers, producers and drummers have many different opinions, those always come from the professional's side. On the other side, the only thing that probably matters is the sound coming out of your speakers, so if the listener enjoys what he listens to, it doesn’t matter how it was created. With that said, many modern productions might lack the organic, natural and analogue sound of the past (let's say that the "past" is the '70s, '80s, early '90s) still though the sound coming from your speakers can be massive. Or different. What Fates Warning really did with Parallels was something different but don't they always do?

Mark Zonder was always an unpredictable drummer with a unique approach and dynamic that drives against the "classic" heavy metal route. Parallels' production is perfect and Zonder's multi-rhythmic performance is like little songs within the songs but yet, everything is song-oriented and not complex for the listener while he also used electronic drums adding a variety of sounds in the album.

Audio reference: CD (Metal Blade 1991 pressing).

9. Dream Theater - Awake (1994)

Produced, mixed and engineered by John Purdell and Duane Baron. Drums and percussion by Mike Portnoy.

Following the success of Images and Words, one of the albums that changed metal music during the '90s, the decade of experimentation and new subgenres, Awake is free of the triggered snare Dave Prater (producer of Images and Words) used and more or less the "holy trinity" of progressive metal is represented in this list with iconic early '90s albums that shaped the genre, created a new generation of fans and inspiring up to this day with their music, performance and sound.

Audio reference: CD (EastWest 1994 pressing)

10. Armored Saint - Win Hands Down (2015)

Produced by Joey Vera. Mixed by Jay Ruston. Drums performed by Gonzo Sandoval. Drums engineered by Josh Newall and Jay Ruston.

Let's add a modern album, shall we? Not exactly "modern" but how heavy metal should sound in the modern era; Refreshing. I remember playing all the time Win Hands Down at the No Remorse Records' store in Athens, Greece, upon its release. One of those days in 2015, there was Fotis Benardo at the store, drummer of bands like Septicflesh and Nightfall, and also audio engineer and producer. While talking about a project we were working with, I noticed that he was distracted by the music coming from the speakers and he just said, "That's a great drum sound, what is this?" This is Win Hands Down, the album with one of the best sounding drums in traditional heavy metal over the last years. And Armored Saint did it again in the latest album, Punching the Sky.

+1. Metallica - Metallica (aka Black Album) (1991)

I guess that this is an album that can't be missing from any similar list, whether we like it or not. Produced by Bob Rock with James Hetfield and Lars Ulirch, the multi-platinum album of Metallica, one of the biggest selling albums in the history of hard rock and metal music, was recorded over a few months, over many takes, different mixes and a final budget of one million US dollars. We all know what followed and the sound of that album influenced countless releases from Xentrix (Kin) to Paradise Lost (Draconian Times) and beyond.

So, what's your favourite drum sound?

OMEN interview - Kenny Powell speaks from the Arena...

While recording the new album "Hammer Damage", the mighty OMEN release through No Remorse Records "Into The Arena", a compilation of live recordings with the original line up and previously rare and unreleased demo recordings. Kenny Powell took a break of the hard studio work and shared with us some thoughts and memories from the OMEN history.
Bow down to the Axeman!

OMEN were formed in Henryetta, Oklahoma in the beginning of the 80s. Then you moved to Los Angeles with Steve Wittig and Jody Henry. What can you recall from your first years in L.A. and how did you join Savage Grace?

That is pretty close to the truth, that line up in Oklahoma was never called OMEN, though several of the songs on “Battle Cry” were based on songs we were working on. There was another member, Roger Sisson on bass and vocals, he was my life long best friend and we learned to play together. He was going to make the move to L.A. with us, but his wife threatened to divorce him at the last minute and he did not go. She divorced him any way a couple of years later and I know he regretted not going for years, it really sucked because when we got to L.A. I could not find a bass player worth a fuck or a singer. After a year of trying to find members, I was asked to join Savage Grace. I agreed to do two records with them, but I was always going back to my own band and everyone knew that. It was a good experience for me and I meet a lot of people in the music business through them, including Brian Slagel.

During that time, you met Brian Slagel from Metal Blade Records and when you parted ways with Savage Grace, Metal Blade decided to work together with OMEN. Why did you part ways with Savage Grace and how did the co-operation with Metal Blade started?

I had made friends with Brian while we were recording the Savage Grace EP. That was before the Evil Music business corrupted everyone and he was a big fan of the two songs I had written for Savage Grace record, “Battle Cry” and “Die by the Blade”. At the last minute the guys in S.G. informed me that my songs would not be on the record, and that was the escape route for me to leave. I called Brian and asked him if he would be interested in signing my project when everything was in place. He immediately told me I had a record deal to get a band together.

How did you find J.D. Kimball and what J.D. stands for? What kind of person was he?

While I was doing the Savage Grace thing, Steve and Jody had started playing in some other start up bands. Jody in a band with Steve Addler, who went on to be in Guns and Roses, and Steve in a garage band that I don't think had ever played a gig. I called both of them up and told them it was time to do what we moved to L.A. for and asked them if they had run across any decent singers. Steve invited me to their rehearsal and I could not believe what I was seeing. Really good band, good songs and a singer that was everything I had been looking for. His lyrics were right in line with what I had been writing and he was not some Hollywood pussy boy. He was Metal! The J.D. stands for John David. R.I.P.

Three classic records followed. Three landmarks for Heavy Metal music. “Battle Cry” (1984), “Warning Of Danger” (1985) and “The Curse” (1986). What can you recall from the recording sessions of these albums and what was your writing procedure during composing?

Those records happened very quickly. There was great energy and we worked very hard, rehearsing almost every night. Jody was living with me and after  borrowing a bass from Brian East and pounding him every day to switch from  guitar to bass we were constantly  writing songs. “Battle Cry” was recorded in 7 or 8 days and the band had only been together for a few weeks. Many of the song ideas had been around for a couple of years so it was not hard to get them in order. We took a little longer with “Warning of Danger” but it was also recorded in only a couple of weeks. “The Curse” was our first time to get a decent budget and take a little time to record. The writing process has always been pretty much the same for OMEN, I usually have my ideas for the music worked out in my head, and sometimes vocal ideas and at least some of the lyrics. Jody was always good for some great bass intros or some times a partial song idea that I would help him finish. As time went on I just let J.D. take over writing most of the lyrics and he would come to rehearsal after we had the music all worked out which worked out great. Unfortunately by “The Curse” problems were creeping in, Jody and J.D. were not getting along and some personal demons were starting to creep in with J.D. That later ended in him having to leave the band.

How were things in your live shows? Did you give headline gigs in small venues? Did you play with big names of that time?

We never really toured back then, not anything like I do now. Little stints of four or five shows sometimes headlining, other times with bands like Metal Church, Lizzy Borden, Fates Warning, Slayer and even Motörhead. Ever few months we would play a show in L.A. Phoenix, San Francisco or Seattle, but we always did well in Texas for some reason. We started getting on some bigger tours after the “Nightmares” EP, but that was when everything started to spiral out of control with J.D. and it was really heart breaking for me after working so hard and accomplishing so much the first 3 years.

How were things in Heavy Metal scene of L.A. during that time?

There were times when I thought it was great and going out to the clubs to see other bands when we were not playing was a great event, a lot of  comradeship  in the scene between musicians, especially with some of the Metal Blade bands. But it quickly changed when things got bigger, friends that I thought were close changed and suddenly it was only business and backstabbing and lies. I had enough of it by 1989 and left for Texas. I miss some of the real friends I made there, like Bill Metoyer, but honestly I am much happier being in Europe these days. The fans and bands seem real and honest over there and really into the music not to hang out and look cool. The music is what counts to me.

“Nightmares” EP followed in 1987 and OMEN appeared somehow more thrash-y in new songs like “Nightmares” and “Shock Treatment”. Meanwhile and during the 1987 shows, you were playing some unreleased songs like “Vicious Attack”, “The Jacket” and “Era Of Crisis”, destined for an album that was never released. Instead of that, Kimball left the band and in 1988 you released “Escape To Nowhere” with different music direction. Can you explain us how were things in the band that year? What happened to these songs, why did Kimball part ways with OMEN?

I have always been a little of a closet thrasher so that was easy to work into some song ideas for “Nightmares”, some day I will probably do a full out thrash song on an OMEN record, but Epic Power Metal is what I have in my heart, I like to think that we helped to invent that genre of music. The songs you are referring to, were written after J.D. left the band, and where going to be on what turned out to be “Escape to Nowhere”. It was originally going to be titled “Era of Crisis” which ironically is the song I have been working on for the past three weeks! An updated version will be on the “Hammer Damage” record. Finally twenty five years later it will see the light of day!
As far as J.D. leaving the band it was a situation that was impossible to continue. I always thought that we would get back together at some point. I loved his song-writing and we made some epic music together. It is a complete shame that it ended the way it did. He never got to see Europe and what he helped to accomplish.

Who was responsible for the change of your music direction in “Escape To Nowhere” (a good album in my opinion), who introduced you the singer Coburn Pharr and producer Paul O’Neill?

I meet Coburn through Steve Wittig, he was a room mate at a house that we were renting, so he kind of knew most of the OMEN songs already.  When things went bad with J.D. we were in the middle of a tour and he flew out and finished the tour. I think if we had done the “Era of Crisis” record with me and Bill Metoyer producing it would have been a far better record, I know what the singer for OMEN needs to sound like within what they are capable of doing better than anyone else, so it would definitely have been something totally different than “Escape...” I guess I will take responsibility for the music style changing on that record, it was not my intention, I was ready to record the heaviest, fastest OMEN record ever and I should have put my foot down on the change of styles. It was my first time to work with a producer and I just got up in the moment of doing something different. I want to make it clear that I have the utmost respect for Paul O'Neill, I think he is a musical genius. He was perfect for Savatage and “Hall of the Mountain King” is to this day one of my very favorite records of all time. I would love to work with him again on something else, I just feel like I am the only one that should produce OMEN, it is my baby and only my warped brain understands how it works!

After that what happened and OMEN disappeared? Did you play live gigs to support this release and how were things between you and Metal blade that time?

The funny thing is that we toured more for that record than all of the other ones combined! “Thorn in your Flesh” was a radio hit in several cities for months and we did probably forty headlining shows, tour bus for the first time, we actually made money for a change. There was no support from the record company, they hated the record, and the crazy thing was that was a song that kept being thrown off the record and I fought to keep it on. It was not even finished, like about half of the songs on that album. Metal Blade pulled the budget after they heard some of the songs.  Thank God for Paul O' Neill, who pulled money from his own pocket to pay for mixing the record. In the end though it was time to put OMEN on hold for a while, I was the only original member left after all of the touring, I did not want to do another record with Metal Blade, and there were three or four records left on the contract, so I just ended everything and asked to be released from the contract, which they did after a few months. It was a very depressing time for me, I realized that no matter how hard I worked at it, I could not control the actions of everyone else and that not everyone had the same passion for the band that I did. Serious reality check!

What have you done until the release of “Reopening The Gates” in 1997 and how did you come up with that album?

I was not going to have another band, too much Pain! I was thinking of producing other bands and writing songs for other artists, so I left L.A. for Dallas, TX to work for a music store chain called Guitar Center. Of course I went to see a band one night, I think it was Steve Stevens of Billy Idol, and I fucking knew I should be playing. I formed a band called Step Child with current OMEN bass player Andy Haas, I wanted to do something more for fun and not something to be so passionate about, it was lighter music, still metal by most people standards, but certainly not OMEN. It started to take off and we did a record and started playing all of the time, it was turning into a real band, had to quit my job etc. It just kind of hit me one day, if I will be serious for something it will have to be OMEN. I really did not know that OMEN had so many people that still loved the music, my son wanted to be involved, which I thought was great, but his heart was more new (at that time) U.S metal, so it kind of went in a little different direction. My heart was old school epic, but I did not want to be a dinosaur either. We did our first Euro tour ever, and every night it was one less new song, two more old songs in the set. Fucking awesome I thought, people really do care about what we did those first three or four years, I am not insane, this really was something special, something to be proud of.

When did you find out about Kimball’s passing?

I received an e-mail from his brother, maybe one or two days after he passed. I had been trying to find him for a couple of years, I wanted him to go to Europe and see what he had accomplished, I wanted to write new songs together and release an album. He had just kind of disappeared and no one that I knew could find him. His brother told me that John had been following OMEN on the internet, and wanted him to contact me after his passing, that he thought it was great that I had kept it going and that being in OMEN was something he was very proud of. Apparently he had been sick for some years, and I wish that he would have contacted me, I would have done what ever possible to get some last songs with him before it was to late. The “Into the Arena” project was something that I wanted to do to honor him. Unfortunately there were very few live recordings of OMEN With J.D. and they are probably sitting in the Metal Blade vaults. Steve Wittig found a cassette tape of the monitor mix from a show in San Antonio Texas from around 1986 and sent me a copy. It was in horrible condition, out of phase, some gaps in the songs where the monitor guy was cutting it off and on, but all I had of him live. I worked on this for over a year, finding a little slice to move in from another part of the song to fill the hole, recording it over and over again to pick out music or voice, so I could up the E.Q. So as to hear everything. There are no overdubs of new music, everything is from that shitty cassette and am very proud to have brought it back to life so fans can hear it after all of these years. And by the way, the new OMEN record that will be out soon “Hammer Damage” that was the name of a certain garage band all those years ago, it will be my final recorded tribute to Mr. Kimball, but I know he will be with us in spirit every time we all sing along to songs like “Teeth of the Hydra” or “In The Arena”.

Your latest studio album (until now, August 2012) is “Eternal Black Dawn”. Give us all the info about its release and the years that followed with all the live shows around the globe, South America, Germany, Greece and festivals like Keep It True and Up The Hammers.

I feel that “Eternal Black Dawn” was an important step in getting OMEN back on track. I did all of the recording myself at the OMEN studio and it was a great learning experience. It took Kevin a while to get into the OMEN style, but I felt like he did a good job, I just kept sending him back home with the first three records until it clicked. It open a lot of doors for the band and I was hoping to keep that line up for the next record. But as I have found out from the past, not everyone shares the passion. Rick and Andy were the first to leave, Rick to start his own business, Andy had Three kids to raise, Kevin stayed on for a lot of the tours, but when we started to work on the new album, it was apparent that his priority was his own band. I can relate to that, I did the same with Savage Grace, and I just did not want to work around his busy schedule. I wanted the new OMEN record to be the number one priority. All in all, EBD was a good experience for me.

“Eternal Black Dawn” singer Kevin Goocher left the band, George Call from ASKA came, you gave lot of live shows together and I really liked his voice, and now a new singer is in the band, Matt Story. How did you meet Matt and what the future holds for OMEN.

To set the record straight, two people have left Omen on their own, Rick Murray, and Andy Haas. Andy is back in the band, his kids are old enough now to not need constant attention. I hate changing members worse than anything else in the world, especially singers, which I seem to have bad luck with. I don't like to air dirty laundry, I don't find it productive. If you want to be in OMEN, I expect only one thing, if you commit to something then I expect that you will do everything in your power to live up to those commitments. This is my life now, I have dedicated myself to OMEN for as long as I can physically continue to do it. As I have said, I know that everyone is not as committed as I am, I do not expect that. With the exception of the last three members, I hold no ill will towards anyone, but time and again people made commitments, that ended up costing me, or I should say my wife, who bust's her ass for me to be able to do this, thousands of dollars, damaged my reputation, which is the most important to me, because anyone that knows me, knows that if I say I will do it, I will do it or I will die trying. I tried everything in my power to get the last singer on the new album, but after three years of trying, I got a half ass effort on one song, and the excuses that, “don't really want to do this, because it does not matter what I do, people will say it is not as good as J.D. lets just keep touring with the old songs”. I don't need that, I still have a lot of gas in my tank, and I will never stop playing those songs, I love them. I am super happy with what Matt has done on the new record. He actually listens to what I have to say and I hope he is the last singer in OMEN, but I know the facts, you don't make any money in this band, people have families, travelling is a bitch and not for pussies, I always tell everyone, it is 23 hours of hell for one hour of glory, you better be willing to pay that price or you will not last long. For me, it's well worth it, and would not want to do anything else with my life.

Which are the mistakes of your past, that knowing them now, you would change?

You can not change the past, you can only hope to learn from it.

And which are the best moments in OMEN history?

Those are still to come!

Flaming Metal System

Heavy Metal.

Mark Shelton (Manilla Road), Jack Starr (Virgin Steele, Burning Starr, solo), Mark Zonder (Warlord, Fates Warning), Joey Vera (Armored Saint, Fates Warning), Devon Graves (Psychotic Waltz, Dead Soul Tribe), Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower, Spastic Ink), Mark Briody (Jag Panzer), Kenny Powell (Omen), Steve Wittig (Omen), George Call (Aska), D.C. Cooper (Royal Hunt, Silent Force, solo), Zak Stevens (Savatage, Circle II Circle), Chris & Tino Troy (Praying Mantis), Carl Cadden-James (Shadow Gallery), Jeff Lords (Crimson Glory), Ken Erb (Shok Paris), Joe Floyd (Warrior), Joe Comeau (Liege Lord, Annihilator), Juan Garcia (Agent Steel), Tore Østby (Conception, Ark), Henrik Flyman (Evil Masquerade, Moahni Moahna), Mats Leven (Krux, Therion), Christian “Chritus” Lindersson (Count Raven, Saint Vitus, Lord Vicar), Lars Johansson (Candlemass), Bårt “Faust” Eithun (Emperor, Mongo Ninja), Robert Garven (Cirith Ungol), Howie Bentley (Cauldron Born, Briton Rites), Philip Swanson (Hour Of 13, Seamount, Briton Rites), Brent Sullivan (Slauter Xstroyes, Spirit Web, WinterKill), Randy Barron (Tyrant’s Reign, WinterKill), Greg Hill (Dammaj), George Tsalikis (Zandelle), Paul van Rijswijk (Hammerhawk, Emerald) και Marta Gabriel (Crystal Viper).

Πόσο πίσω θα πάμε για να βρούμε τις ρίζες και την έννοια του Heavy Metal; Στους Judas Priest, τους Black Sabbath και την Αγγλία των '70s; Στο “Born To Be Wild” και το “You Really Got Me”, τους Cream και τον Jimi Hendrix; Στη νουβέλα “The Soft Machine” του 1962 από τον William Burroughs, με τον χαρακτήρα “the Heavy Metal kid”; Στους κιθαρίστες του rock n roll ή στα blues της Ορλεάνης; Στην εφεύρεση της ηλεκτρικής κιθάρας από τον Adolph Rickenbacker στην Αμερική, το 1930; Τις αυτοσχέδιες κιθάρες στην Αφρική ή τη κλασική μουσική; Στην ανακάλυψη του τροχού και της φωτιάς; Όπου και να φτάσουμε, ενδεχομένως να βρούμε ένα λιθαράκι, αναλόγως με το τι θέλει να πιστεύει ο καθένας, αλλά οι ογκόλιθοι βρίσκονται σε κάποιες βιομηχανικές ζώνες της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας.

New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.

-Ποιες είναι οι 3 βασικές σου προσωπικές επιρροές;

Devon Graves: Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, Queen
Brennan.

-Ποιες θεωρείς ότι είναι οι 3 πιο επιδραστικές μπάντες στην ιστορία του Heavy Metal;

Howie Bentley: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest και Iron Maiden.
Steve Wittig: Maiden, Priest και Sabbath.
Greg Hill: Ο Ronnie James Dio σε ότι έκανε, οι Judas Priest (Rob rocks!) και οι Metallica.
Jeff Lords: Black Sabbath, KISS και Led Zeppelin.
Chris & Tino Troy: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath και Deep Purple.

-Πόσο σημαντικές θεωρείς ότι ήταν οι βάσεις που έθεσε η Αγγλία στο Heavy Metal κατά τη δεκαετία του '70; Θα υπήρχε Heavy Metal χωρίς αυτές;

ως metal.

-Tι αντίκτυπο είχε η έξαρση του New Wave of British Heavy Metal (1979-1983) στην Αμερική;

-Είστε από τις λίγες αμερικάνικες Heavy Metal μπάντες που ξεκίνησαν στη δεκαετία του 70. Τι θεωρούταν Heavy Metal στην Αμερική τη δεκαετία του '70 και τις αρχές των '80s;

Mark Shelton: To metal

-Υπήρχαν Αμερικάνικες μπάντες στα '70s που τις ονομάζατε Heavy Metal;

Robert Garven: Πω πω… Υπήρχαν άπειρα συγκροτήματα, από αυτά που εγώ αποκαλώ Heavy Metal, τη δεκαετία του '70 και του '80, πάρα πολλά για να τα αναφέρω εδώ, αλλά κάποια από τα αγαπημένα μου ήταν οι: Alamo, Bang, Boomerang, Cactus, Captain Beyond, Demian, Dust, Fuse, Head Over Heels, Hydra, Iron Butterfly, James Gang, Left End Montrose, Granicus, Masters of the Airwaves, Niel Merryweather's Space Rangers, Riot, Stray Dog, Thunderhead, Tin House, TKO, Sir Lord Baltimore, Mountain, Grand Funk Railroad, Kansas, Blue Oyster Cult, Bloodrock, Yesterday & Today, πρώιμοι ZZ Top, Kiss…

-Πόσο σημαντικό θεωρείς ότι ήταν το παραδοσιακό Heavy Metal στην Ευρώπη τη δεκαετία του '80; Και ποιες θεωρείς ότι ήταν οι σημαντικές μπάντες της εποχής;

-Αν είχατε καταφέρει να περιοδεύσετε στην Ευρώπη τη δεκαετία του '80, πιστεύεις ότι θα ήταν διαφορετικό το μέλλον της μπάντας σας; Είχε σημασία αυτό τότε και είχατε επίγνωση της κατάστασης όσον αφορά το Heavy Metal στην Ευρώπη;

-Πόσο σημαντικό θεωρείς ότι ήταν το παραδοσιακό Heavy Metal στην Αμερική τη δεκαετία του '80; Και ποιες θεωρείς ότι ήταν οι σημαντικές μπάντες της εποχής;

-Θεωρείται δεδομένο ότι στην Αμερική με την είσοδο των '90s ξαφνικά εξαφανίστηκε το Heavy Metal. To πιστεύεις αυτό και αν ναι, ποια θεωρείς ότι ήταν τα αίτια;

Οι Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, κλπ.
George Tsalikis: To metal
George Call: Εξαφανίστηκε εμπορικά αλλά δεν εξαφανίστηκε εντελώς. Στο ραδιόφωνο δεν ήθελαν να το ξέρουν. Το MTV ενδιαφερόταν λιγότερο και οι άστατοι, μoδάτοι μουσικοί που ρυπαίνουν την Αμερική, άρχισαν να αλλάζουν τα μαλλιά τους και προσπάθησαν να ακολουθήσουν τη νέα τάση, η οποία ήταν το grunge. Πολλοί από εμάς έμειναν πιστοί στο heavy metal. Οι Aska πραγματοποίησαν τις περισσότερες από τις περιοδείες τους στις ΗΠΑ καθ’ όλη τη δεκαετία του 90, άρα είναι πολύ σαφές για μένα, ότι υπήρχε ακόμη βιώσιμη αγορά. Και ήμασταν εκεί να καλύπτουμε τη θέση που έμενε κενή από τους κυνηγούς της κάθε εφήμερης μόδας. Δεν είμαι της άποψης ότι όταν εμφανίζεται ένα νέο στυλ μουσικής πρέπει να εγκαταλείπουμε ότι αγαπήσαμε πριν. Ειδικά όταν το τι υπήρχε πριν ήταν τόσο γαμημένα φοβερό. Κοιτάξτε τι συνέβη στο grunge. Είναι νεκρό τώρα και στη θέση του υπάρχει αυτή η αναζωπύρωση της πραγματικού metal με την κουλτούρα των νέων. Τα παιδιά μακραίνουν τα μαλλιά τους ξανά. Οι μπάντες που ήταν διάσημες όταν μεγάλωνα, είναι δημοφιλείς και πάλι. Αυτό είναι ένα πολύ όμορφο πράγμα για να συμβεί στην Αμερική. Ειδικά όταν τα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης επέμειναν ότι το metal ήταν νεκρό εδώ και πολλά χρόνια, ενώ στην πραγματικότητα, τίποτα από αυτά δεν ήταν αλήθεια. Αυτή ήταν η κύρια αιτία του θανάτου του. Τα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης προσποιήθηκαν ότι το metal τελείωσε, για να αγκαλιάσουν τη ραπ μουσική και όλα τα είδη των άλλων σκουπιδιών. Και τα πρόβατα ακολουθούν. Στην Αμερική, δυστυχώς, στους ανθρώπους αρέσει να τους δίνεις την ποπ κουλτούρα με το κουτάλι. Πώς αλλιώς μπορεί κανείς να εξηγήσει τους Jonas Brothers;

-Ποιες θεωρείς ότι είναι οι σημαντικότερες Heavy Metal μπάντες της Αμερικής στα '90s και '00s;

Priest, Maiden, Sabbath
Zak Stevens: Θα έλεγα τους Disturbed, Korn, Shinedown, Judas Priest, Metallica, Queensryche, Godsmack και Megadeth.
Devon Graves: Tool, Metallica, Rob Zombie.

-Πιστεύεις ότι μπορεί να χαρακτηριστεί κάτι ως "US Μetal";

Οι Dream Theater είναι μια US metal μπάντα, το ίδιο και οι Iced Earth.
Metal.
Jack Starr: Το US metal μπορεί να χαρακτηριστεί από τους Manowar, Jack Starr, Riot, Virgin Steele, Queensryche, Culprit, Wild Dogs, Racer X, Flotsam and Jetsam, Liege Lord, κτλ
Joe Comeau: US Metal; Σίγουρα. Συγκροτήματα που προήλθαν από την ανατολική ακτή, το Bay Area ή τη δυτική ακτή, έχουν διαφορετικό ήχο από τα περισσότερα Σουηδικά ή Γερμανικά συγκροτήματα, καταλαβαίνεις;
Joey Vera: Φυσικά… more bluesy than classical.

-Πιστεύεις ότι υπάρχει αμερικάνικη παραδοσιακή Heavy Μetal μπάντα που να είναι πιο μεγάλη από τους Iron Maiden ή Judas Priest;

Henrik Flyman: Όχι.
Howie Bentley: Όχι.
George Call: Ω ναι.

-Πόσο ξεκάθαροι είναι οι όροι Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Epic Metal, Doom Metal και Thrash Metal για εσάς;

Ακούστε το “Sinner” των Priest και στη συνέχεια το “Last Rose of Summerαπό το ίδιο άλμπουμ. Ή τοOver the Mountainτου Ozzy και το “Goodbye To Romance”.

-Ποιες είναι (αν υπάρχουν για εσένα) οι διαφορές μεταξύ Ευρωπαϊκού και Αμερικάνικου Heavy Metal;

To Ευρωπαϊκό Power Metal (Helloween, Stratovarius) είναι πολύ διαφορετικό από το Αμερικάνικο (Crimson Glory, Helstar)…

-Ποιο θεωρείς ότι είναι καλύτερο κοινό, το Ευρωπαϊκό ή το Αμερικάνικο και τι αντίκτυπο έχει αυτό στη μπάντα;

-Oι επανασυνδέσεις πολλών μπαντών από τη δεκαετία 80, θεωρείς ότι έχουν τίμιες προθέσεις;

-Ποιο πιστεύεις ότι θα είναι το μέλλον του Heavy Metal όταν αποσυρθούν οι τελευταίες μεγάλες arena bands σαν τους Iron Maiden και τους Metallica;
