The albums we enjoyed most in 2020... And a review of the year's releases.

The usual prologue would be that no one can say that they have listened to almost everything that was released during 2020. Everyone who claims that is wrong, so we will speak just for our favourite releases and the albums we enjoyed mostly in 2020. The "best" albums of 2020 according to Crystal Logic, and a wider review of the covid-year in metal (mainly) music.

Everything you will read below, are releases that can be found in physical format. "Releases" that were available only digitally, are not included. You will read more words and comments, even full new written reviews and opinions related to the music industry that will probably disappoint a few people that can't handle the truth.

2020 was a hard year but at the same time, it was a year with a LOT of music. It was a year with many diverse releases. Epic heavy metal, US power metal, Lovecraftian black metal, retro hard rock, progressive metal, technical death metal, comeback albums of classic '80s bands and anything else you can imagine and we listened to, while we revisited the Rush, Van Halen, UFO, Quiet Riot, Power Trip, Iron Age and Uriah Heep albums when we mourned the passing of Neil Peart, Eddie Van Halen, Pete Way, Frankie Banali, Riley Gale, Wade Allison, Lee Kerslake and Ken Hensley.

Actually, I think that in almost every year we write "... was a difficult year" but honestly, 2020 was probably the shitiest gloryhole someone can force you in, so let's forget for a while everything else and remember the music. And don't forget to read Rob Halford's Confess and Snowy Shaw's The Book of Heavy Metal.

1. ETERNAL CHAMPION - Ravening Iron (No Remorse)

It's been a while since the TOP album of a year was so obvious. Eternal Champion's sophomore album is a force d'être modern traditional metal classic reaching both artistic and commercial success that breaks the boundaries of underground and epic heavy metal, reaching the second position of the 2020 best albums according to Decibel magazine in the USA, the third position of the 2020 best albums according to Metal Archives, and many top lists of media around the globe.

Jason Tarpey, Arthur Rizk and Co. grow so fast that even the 4-year period that separates the new album from the (already) classic debut The Armor of Ire didn't affect anything, just helped the band to raise the metal banners higher. Being the truest, hardest and best of their kind, the legion of Eternal Champion offered a colossal album that just like the debut will grow to a legendary status in the years to come. A grower that with every listen will reveal layered details that are much more than the legacy of the olde.

From the first moment the "Ravening Iron" track was unleashed, many talked about the Warlord vibe (that actually is Lordian Guard/Lordian Winds) but beneath of that touch lies a huge inspiration from Greek music that influenced the band during their visit in Greece with Arthur Rizk staying for more days, visiting different places. Meanwhile, in "Worms of the Earth" you can locate a Mystification-era Manilla Road vibe, in "Banners of Arhai" they revisit "Shade Gate" (the closing instrumental of the debut album) and the "NOW DIE!" part could be a stand-out moment even in the greatest epic heavy metal albums ever.

At the same time, despite being a solid offering of 8 tracks, fans over the world have different preferences revealing a diversity that many won't recognize from the beginning. American fans love mostly the opening cut ("A Face in the Glare'') while in Europe fans mostly prefer other tracks like "Ravening Iron" and "Worms of the Earth''. Production wise, the wizardry of Arthur Rizk, the most important new musician according to the author of this blog, is perfect for the genre and already has established a sound of his own, influencing a huge part of the scene. But what really makes Eternal Champion a groundbreaking band is not only the fact that they have their own distinguished sound, they are the "heavy metal" band that many fans of different (extreme) genres listen, without actually being "metal fans", and we're talking about the crossover and hardcore scene of the United States. "You will be an outcast if you're living in Texas and don't listen to Eternal Champion", could be written in an engraved iron inscription close to Austin, while there could be another similar one somewhere in Philly.

As for the controversial cover art, an album like this needed a legend to visually represent it and the one who was reached is no other than Ken Kelly (Kiss, Rainbow, Manowar). After a few months of work and in close cooperation with the label's executives and band, Kelly managed to capture everything the band wanted (also based in singer's and lyricist's Jason Tarpey story, The Godblade) adding all the elements that made his art recognizable and at the same time representing what sword-and-sorcery visual art was (and is) about over the years.

Eternal Champion's Ravening Iron is history in the making. Be part of it.

Check also: While Eternal Champion raised their banner higher than everyone, IRONSWORD with Servants of Steel confused most of the lists since their album has "2019" written on the CD format but it was available mainly in the first days of 2020. In 2020 though, the year of great comeback albums, CIRITH UNGOL's Forever Black got a huge anticipated exposure. Some people loved it, others expected more but with a total duration less than 40 minutes Forever Black has a nice flow including excellent tracks like "Stormbringer" while the band tried to capture vibes from all of their albums.

An enjoyable album we loved listening to, is definitely THRONE OF IRON's Adventure One. Real victims of Covid-19, they were trapped in the air, flying from the United States to Greece in order to perform at the last-minute postponed Up the Hammers festival. Their first adventure is a dungeons-and-dragons metal album created with pure passion and fun with the video of "Lichspire" makes you just wanna love them. Do you lift?

2. HITTMAN - Destroy All Humans (No Remorse)

Hittman managed to come full circle returning to the days of great songwriting and sounded fresh at the same time. Catchy, melodic, powerful and inspired, with 8 tracks in the spirit of the best albums of US metal, the guitar duo of Jim Bacchi and John Inglima offers everything that their same titled debut album also did 32 years ago. Singer Dirk Kennedy sounds better than ever in the comeback album that starts with the Savatage -"The Dungeons Are Calling"- similar opening track (using a similar skull-cover), moving to the total US power metal riffing worship of "Breathe", the melodic "The Ledge" and closing with the Queensrÿche vibes of "Love, The Assassin" and those excellent guitar solo parts. How many times have you listened to a new album with excellent guitar solo parts? They're getting less over the years but this is not the case; Destroy All Humans is an album full of inspired and greatly performed guitar parts. The best comeback album of 2020 by a band that returned and is here to stay with more new music and not moving on as a legacy act.

More classic US metal to check: What a refreshing heavy metal sound ARMORED SAINT have in Punching the Sky! And they definitely have one of the best drum sounds you can get out there today. Armored Saint is one of the most confident and solid heavy metal bands, a monster on stage and in the latest album you still get "punches" of great heavy metal. Working again with producer Bill Metoyer, TYRANT added Robert Lowe in vocals and returned with Hereafter, a magnificent album including killer tracks like "Dancing on Graves" and "Pieces of Mine".

3. PSYCHOTIC WALTZ - The God-Shaped Void (InsideOut)

It's like not a day passed since Bleeding, the fourth album of Psychotic Waltz, released in 1996. Just like pure artists, Devon Graves, Brian McAlpin, Dan Rock, Ward Evans and Norm Leggio, didn't try to recreate what they did with A Social Grace or Into the Everflow. The latest album is a progressive metal redemption full with exceptional melodies, one of the best guitar performances of 2020, a singer that deserves a place among the greatest ones and the best lyrics of any album during that year. You just have to FEEL the album in its entirety.

The modern-age social-media passion of "stuck like flies, this web worldwide will swallow, make hollow" is an important element of the album. How the world has been evolved with each individual self-committed to digital institution through his cell-phone and the world-wide-web, just like a few of the patients of Miloš Forman's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest film, that could leave at any time, but are too afraid to do so. Addiction is the disguised fear of the modern world, where each individual has a different presence in reality (looks afraid) and another one in the digital world (looks dominant).

The actual songwriting and performance is not complex and poly-rhythmic, you still get vibes from Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath and the early Ozzy years plus everything the band members have done since 1996. The melodies are addictive and songs like "Sisters of the Dawn" stand at the top of 2020. And if you will FEEL the album, you will get answers to unanswered questions while at the same time, you will have questions even for simple things like, why "Sisters of the Dawn" got that title and not "Fathers of Creation", "Children of the Fallen", or "Children of the One"? In the end, we're just spellbound by that album and that word never sounded better.

4. LORD OF LIGHT - Morningstar (No Remorse)

In the end of 2019, multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Nicklas Kirkevall from Sweden uploaded his music on a few digital platforms introducing Morningstar and not later than a few days, it reached a few record labels and fans with an enormous positive response. A multi-record deal was offered and Morningstar was officially released a few months later in 2020 getting excellent reviews. With the idea to continue as a full band, Lord of Light's music is heavy metal, it is progressive metal, it is prog power and everything in-between having a strong melodic approach. It will bring in mind '90s prog metal, late-Savatage, even Royal Hunt, and yet you can feel that there are elements that have a certain uniqueness. "I think there is much to be done within the world of metal that hasn’t been done already", Nicklas said to Crystal Logic. "Sometimes it can feel like there aren’t any more uncharted waters to explore, but I sincerely hope we get the opportunity to prove otherwise in the coming years. I know we’re not the only ones, but I think we have the chance to contribute something really meaningful." Just listen to this beautiful album.

5. FATES WARNING - Long Day Good Night (Metal Blade)

How can they ever fail? It just can't happen. Fates Warning's music is like an old friend that grows with us and even if at the first listen Ray Alder's voice sounded "tired" to our poor ears, we just didn't properly listen to what he said, or we mistakenly tried to compare the album with past FW releases. Alder is not tired, he is just performing sad and bittersweet lyrics in a very mature way. Home, changes, regrets and sorrow. The rain and the sun, scars, new beginnings and altered pages.

Fates Warning's music is a huge book where every album is a chapter that's re-written over the years, while we revisit every album in a different age and era. Most of the reviews written in just a few days (even hours for unprofessional "critics") after a new FW album fail to catch the essence of it. Albums like Long Day Good Night are albums we're going to stay with for a long, long time.

Jim Matheos wanted to leave behind all of the pages with a handful of doubts but we're still following him even if he asked us not to, three decades ago. We never kept that distance. Thank you Fates Warning for always being there, and through the change we still remain after the rain, because deep inside we know YOU wait for us under the sun.

6. ERIC CLAYTON - A Thousand Scars (Independent)

What a story! Eric Clayton's life is a life full of scars and those scars are the wounds that have been finally healed. This album is his confession, his revelation, his scars. Eric Clayton and the Nine create melancholic and spiritual music based on the scars of a man who found again his soul through music and love. A deeply personal album, a narrative where you can't really personally relate with just like other albums but you can FEEL it just like watching an emotional film if you will give your full attention. An album, a story and a spiritual journey that deserves your attention.

In the music industry part, a part that has left a few scars in Eric Clayton's life, Eric Clayton and the Nine decided to release A Thousand Scars independently starting a fund campaign with an overpriced album pre-order many months before its release. Fans that wanted to support directly the artists pre-ordered and pre-paid for music that wasn't even recorded; a sign of the times. However, not all pre-orders were finally delivered including the author of this blog. There might be scars from the music industry but sometimes the industry knows better how to handle a release.

In the end, this is Eric's redemption and maybe this is the only thing that matters for the man but also the people that were always supporting and thinking of him even when he was lost between the darkness and the night. We embraced his return and now we are waiting for the future.

Check also: If Saviour Machine's Legend (unfinished) trilogy is the soundtrack to the Apocalypse, ANAAL NATHRAKH's Endarkenment is the soundtrack to the sickest ending of the world. An experimental pig hybrid with cocks in its eyes, industrial metal in its heart, black metal in its soul, grindcore in its mind and a diverse vocal delivery. It has nothing to do with A Thousand Scars but its wound is always open because every listen is a razor coming back to flesh.

7. SACRED OUTCRY - Damned for All Time (No Remorse)

The best power metal album of Europe for 2020 came from Greece and has a long history behind it. 20 years ago, Sacred Outcry was formed with influences vast and passion great, inspired by artists like Manowar, Warlord, Domine and Basil Poledouris. The first recordings took place in 2001-2003 but not a voice was heard since then. Still though, that album never left the mind of the band members, especially bassist's George Apalodimas who never gave up his dream to finally see that album finished and released. The recordings were completed between 2015-2018, orchestral arrangements were added, editing, mixing and mastering was finished in 2019 and Sacred Outcry finally presented us the first chapter in The Sacred Chronicles under the title Damned for All Time.

Every instrument sounds crystal clear, the bass sound is beyond awesome, guest vocalist Yannis Papadopoulos (ex-Wardrum, Beast in Black) is at the top of his game and every detail seems to have been perfectly arranged in order to complete an album that will be a modern reference for its style. Songs like "Where Ancient Gods Are Still Hailed" and "Damned For All Time" are up there, in the top of the best European power metal tracks of this millennium.

Check also: It seems that Greece and Cyprus did it very well in 2020. DEXTER WARD returned in the days of Epic Metal with the third full-length album simply entitled III, a massive statement of pure epic heavy metal worship from fans for fans. In the same attitude, SOLITARY SABRED released By Fire & Brimstone the best US power metal album that hasn't been released by an American US power metal since Solitary Sabred's previous offering to the altar of the metal gods.

8. WYTCH HAZEL - III: Pentecost (Bad Omen)

Colin Hendra and Co. did it again, just two years after the magnificent II: Sojourn. An album like this one can only come from England and Ireland, nowhere else. No one can write and perform this kind of epic hard rock better than the places of Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash and Thin Lizzy.

Do you believe that this would sound better with a singer that has a wider range? Do you find a few of the lyrics cringy? Well, lines like "Why should that demon have all the glory? He was only Archangel at the start of the story" lack the depth of "the Gods are crying bombs" and what Psychotic Waltz did, while they are probably closer to Stryper's "Jesus makes me want to sing" since Wytch Hazel are devoted to the Light and Christianity. And if these are disadvantages, at the same time these are advantages since the "better" vocalist couldn't perform better in those songs. This is not a comparison as strong as Ozzy's vocals are in his songs since no "better" singer can replace him but you know what I mean. As for the lyrics, Wytch Hazel's music sounds very positive, so simple and catchy lines like "Spirit and fire show me the way" is all that is needed in this feel-good daddy-rock that's beautiful and catchy, sounds honest and humble and at the same time as epic as it needs with medieval themes, and inspiration from the British music legends.

In the next mixtape you're going to make, add "Sonata" after Fates Warning's "Under the Sun".

Check also: HIGH SPIRITS' Hard to Stop is probably their best album since 2011's Another Night and one of the most feel-good and enjoyable albums of 2020. Let your spirit shine!

9. OPIUM WARLORDS - Nembutal (Svart)

There aren't (true) doom metal fans who don't know who Sami Albert Hynninen is. The Witchfinder of many diverse projects and bands returned in the roots of Reverend Bizarre's doom metal with the nearly 20-minute opening track of Nembutal entitled "A Heavy Heart" but other than that and the closing track "Xanadu", everything in-between is abstract and disturbing. In the end, the complete album is nothing else than a droned apocalyptic offering of a "yellow jacket'd" hypnotic memoir about death.

This not-easy accessible and grotesque album demands your full attention, just like many forms of art. Each side of the vinyl version is a separate entity and in the end they all make sense, even if in the beginning I was listening only to Side A until I moved forward... in Hell. When Sami sings "The silent pilot comes at last: death!" you get that heavy Thomas Gabriel Fischer vibe; an artist who built his career in the meaning of death, and total darkness where there is no hope and everything ceases to exist. From the first cut's line "there is cancer in the wind" to the closing's cut line "breathe / breathe / breath / death", the lungs are filled with the smoke of wisdom and death at the same time.

Check also: ATRAMENTUS' Stygian is a haunted album created from misery, anger and anxiety. It dwells in bad mentality and depression, drowning in an infinite void, having also one of the best cover arts for 2020.

10. OZZY OSBOURNE - Ordinary Man (Epic)

Anything you will say about this not-so-ordinary-man will never justify his real personality, his persona, the music, his legacy and his acts. He is anything you believe for him and everything you don't know about him. Right or wrong, Ozzy's music will always remain in eternity while all opinions will fade like footsteps in the sand. And that's the most important and only thing that really matters.

When Tony Iommi and Bill Ward reached the guy who put that famous advert, "Ozzy Zig requires gig, owns his own PA", things didn't even look good. Later Ozzy and Geezer Butler visited Bill Ward asking him to join them in a new band but Bill wanted to stick with Tony. Then, they all decided to try to work together. That's how it all began and more or less, you all know a part of the story that followed; the story those four created. Together. No one crossed the other's way by luck. Fact.

While history roller-coasters on, Ozzy started his successful solo career using his talent to find the most talented partners and new musicians in the likes of Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde that became legendary after working with Oz. With the music industry adding its hand, the madness and talent surrounding Ozzy's band in the '80s, created a heavy metal prototype as iconic as the other four-or-five most important acts of metal music.

When the '90s entered, Ozzy kept the '80s flame with No More Tears, a multi-platinum commercial success while other metal monsters were lost under the new era. And from that point on, with the exception of Ozzmosis, one of his most personal albums, Ozzy was laid completely in the hands of the industry. When we reached 2020, Ozzy returned to an early era of "everything can happen just for music". Ordinary Man is an album created because Ozzy just wanted to perform again without any rush or forced to offer something "specific". He just happened to be in the studio with good company and respected musicians (not new talents he found), including friends and people who respect him from different generations, like Andrew Watt (producer and guitarist), Duff McKagan (bass), Chad Smith (drums) and guests like Slash, even Sir Elton John, creating a few beautiful songs like "Under the Graveyard" and "Ordinary Man", songs we're going to listen more often than songs from better records released the covid-year.

In the end, Ordinary Man is an emotional album of an "old-man" that grabs his harmonica again, joined by people of different ages, generations and genres, feeling again just like a boy but at the same moment he understands time goes by. "Don't forget me as the colours fade". How could we, Ozzάκλα μου?

Check also (the legends): AC/DC returned with Power Up (or PWR/UP), recorded in mid 2018 to early 2019, paying tribute to Malcolm Young and bringing back those rhythms that make you shake your body and feel like a kid again. At the same time, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, the boss of American classic rock writes a Letter to You, a sad and gray album, an emotional reflection of the past.

11. GLACIER - The Passing of Time (No Remorse)

This is actually the first full-length of Glacier and it is as close to the band's underground classic same-titled 1985 EP, as close was the 8-track demo tape that followed in 1988. In the end, Glacier is a name of many people who used it over the years with one common result: Awesome Metal. In The Passing of Time you will find singer Michael Podrybau of the 1985 EP along with new musicians who know very well their craft and also original members of the band adding their contribution connecting Glacier with their past and all eras, offering an album that balances between US and European heavy / power metal.

Check also: FIREWIND Firewind, SATAN'S FALL Final Day.

12. STYGIAN CROWN - Stygian Crown (Cruz Del Sur)

Doom Metal suffered in 2020. Very few releases and even fewer that deserved our attention but the debut album of the US-based pact of Stygian Crown came forth offering salvation to our doomed souls.

Check also: BLACK REVELATION Demon, BRITON RITES Occulte Fantastique, GODTHRYMM Reflections.

13. ESOCTRILIHUM - Eternity of Shaog (I, Voidhanger)

Esoctrilihum's mastermind, Asthâghul, did it again. This is an intense black metal album with a variety of influences, from obvious ones (death metal) to a diversity of soundscapes (psychedelia, prog-rock, folk) that complete the Lovecraftian soundtrack of god Shaog who is imprisoned in a parallel universe.

2020 Black Metal highlights: ABIGOR Totschläger (A Saintslayer's Songbook), AKHLYS Melinoë, HAVUKRUUNU Uinuos Syömein Sota, HORN Mohngang, ODRAZA Rzeczom, STORMKEEP Galdrum, UADA Djinn.

14. CREATURE - Ex Cathedra (I, Voidhanger)

Raphaël Fournier is the closest thing to a genius I can think for 2020. Ex Cathedra is an ambitious and thrilling album of progressive black metal with a completely out-of-the-box songwriting that is a combination of early Covenant music with a Dødheimsgard approach (in lack of a better description).

Check also: ULCERATE's Stare into Death and Be Still will probably dominate many TOP lists for 2020 just like the album of Eternal Champion and this diversity in various TOP lists is an example that there are many different listeners all over the world, and a few of those albums can change the face of the current scene. Unlistenable for a few, unpredictable for others, Ulcerate is here to destroy the norm. However, you can't even imagine what you're going to hear in NEPTUNIAN MAXIMALISM's Éons.

15. HAIL SPIRIT NOIR - Eden in Reverse (Agonia)

Hail Spirit Noir's evolution (progress) is mesmerizing and you don't know what to expect with every album. The black metal themes are nearly audible in the latest album that has the futuristic sound of the past. Are you confused? Just imagine the Blade Runner movie that was filmed in 1982 with a plot based in 2019 but in the real-life-2020, it is now a (retro) film in the past with a (retro) futuristic world that has nothing to do with the current reality. Sharp creativity in reverse with a surrealistic aura.

Check also: HUNTSMEN's Mandala of Fear is a post-whatever-metal-sludge-thing with a post-apocalyptic concept, an ol' prog touch and Hulk-strength riffing. Excellent!

16. WHITE CRONE - The Poisoner (Independent)

There are always times when out of nowhere appears a heavy metal album that sounds fresh, inspired and addictive, with excellent songwriting and performance. White Crone’s debut album is one of those, composed and arranged by the super talented Lisa Mann. Inspired by '80s Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden, combined with Lisa's musical background, Bruce Dickinson-like female vocals, excellent dual guitar parts and ideas, prog elements, a powerful rhythm section with bass guitar dominating the record, a doom-y and mystical aura, a short visit at the Seven Gates of Hell and a guest appearance of legendary drummer Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Dio), make this album one of the most refreshing traditional metal releases of 2020.

Check also: We've missed Ol' Rusty even if we had his Hermit alter ego offering music we never stopped to listen. THE WIZAR'D's Subterranean Exile is a magnificent piece of Arcane Metal that is labeled as heavy or doom or Pagan Altar-inspired by many others.

Breaking the borders of black metal, MALOKARPATAN from Slovakia released Krupinské Ohne mixing Master's Hammer, Bathory, "proto-black" and heavy riffing, acoustic parts and stories from forgotten woodlands.

17. KING WITCH - Body of Light (Listenable)

Mix Black Sabbath, ol' blues and an ol' Motörhead vibe, the heaviest of heavy metal, British and early US doom metal when Doom Metal wasn't even a name for the genre, adding a powerful female voice and you have the Body of Light; A perfect blend of Sabbathian heavy and doom metal. Obey the Riff.

Check also: WOLFTOOTH's Valhalla is the last album of the Sabbathian pact before entering a major label and we will just wait for what's next. Meanwhile, as we wrote again two years ago for the tattooed bearded Richmond wolves: this is too groovy for the regressive doom metal fan, too epic for the stoner fan, too awesome for the rest.

18. SPIRIT ADRIFT - Enlightened in Eternity (Century Media)

You gotta love Nate Garrett. Nate loves heavy metal. And Spirit Adrift's latest album is a pure love for all-things-heavy-metal; The doom-y heavy metal. And "Astral Levitation" is the best tribute you can offer to '80s Black Sabbath.

Check also: LORD VIGO's Danse de Noir, the fourth album of the German doom metal band, is a step forward. And just like Spirit Adrift, "At the Verge of Time" is another great track-tribute to '80s Black Sabbath. We all love '80s Sabbath, don't we?

19. BIFF BYFORD - School of Hard Knocks (Silver Lining)

It's Biff. There is only one Biff. Of course and there are many moments that bring to mind Saxon. It could be a late '80s - early '90s Saxon album and there is nothing wrong with this. Because it's Biff. We love Biff. We love Saxon. And you can't really beat nostalgia and a feel-good album.

Check also: Trevor William Church's HAUNT released two albums in 2020. In the vein of the early '80s heavy metal bands, both Mind Freeze and Flashback sound fresh with the same-titled track of each album being a hit reminding glorious '80s Ozzy commercial moments.

20. ECCLESIA - De Ecclesiae Universalis (Aural)

This heavy / power metal album with those doom metal vibes brings upfront the aura of Tad Morose and Swedish power power metal, plus the power metal moments of doom bands like Candlemass and Memory Garden. Enjoyable and heavy, with a great sound and a pure power metal voice that's extremely suitable, it reminded me that we need a new Fvneral Fvkk album, since their carnal confessions are the true dark gospels of the church.

Check also: SORCERER returned with Lamenting of the Innocent, remembering once again the Tony-Martin-Sabbath-era and adding neoclassical guitar solos in their happier-than-others epic doom metal.

Best EP of 2020:

BLACK SWORD THUNDER ATTACK - March of the Damned (No Remorse)

At last. One of the most cult and obscure acts of underground epic metal finally made it to an official release... Even if it is a 4-track EP. We've been waiting for many years, so I guess it's better than nothing! Despite the obvious Warlord / Lordian Guard worship that is stated in every review I've read, the band with one of the most cult epic metal names offers the most addictive music you're going to listen in 2020 and yes, behind Bill Tsamis' influence, I personally can locate a spectacular and distinguished style that is just BLACK SWORD THUNDER ATTACK. March of the Damned could be the best underground metal release of 2020.

About EPs: From the music industry side, an EP is a kind of release that most record labels avoid in the recent years. A record label will pay the same amount of money for a CD or vinyl, either it is 15 minutes long, or 45 minutes long, but they definitely can't easily sell the EP with the same price as an album. And if they will (because they actually paid the same manufacturing cost, let aside any additional royalties), a few fans will complain for the price, adding many more marketing, promotional and distribution issues, a regular fan can't understand.

A band might say that EPs are "rounded well" and that's not always a lie, but mostly if you want to sell one hundred copies to your friends and a specific underground circle of fans, and get a few reviews from specific online media that's also running from people you're familiar with. Under these circumstances, you can easily release it on your own or find a one-person label that's running his business from his home. But that will never take a band to the next level, unless the band just wants to keep moving like this.

Quality is always better than quantity but since there are people who complain for 35-minute albums, I can't imagine what they will think of EPs, especially when retail prices are close. The music will always reach those who will like it and if a band wants to release music just for a few people it is OK to do it through EPs if their artistic expression is limited to 15 minutes. But if a band wants to keep moving and reach the "next" level, it would be better to present a full album and maybe they will escape the "15 minutes of fame" in a specific underground metal scene. It might take longer to complete it but it will be for the better. For everyone: The band, the record company, the fans.

Off to more albums now, since they were so many in 2020, and there is a huge list of notable mentions.

Best Live Album of 2020:

TRIPTYKON with the Metropole Orkest - Requiem (Live at Roadburn 2019) (Century Media)

Risen from the ashes of Celtic Frost, Thomas Gabriel Fischer comes full circle releasing Requiem (Live at Roadburn 2019) including "Rex Irae (Requiem, Chapter One: Overture)", "Grave Eternal (Requiem, Chapter Two: Transition)" and "Winter (Requiem, Chapter Three: Finale)". Celtic Frost's requiem was originally begun in autumn of 1986 and its first part, "Rex Irae", originally appeared on Into the Pandemonium album. "Winter" originally appeared on Monotheist album and Fischer started writing it in 2001. It was supposed that the requiem should be concluded once Celtic Frost recorded the second part but in the end, requiem was presented in its entirety by Triptykon with the Metropole Orkest.

The future belongs to the brave: 10 (+10) names to look for the future.

Long prologue: Falling off the edge of the digital era.

There will always be people in the music industry for the wrong reasons. Some of them professionally, some of them parasitic; they're just there, trying to gain their 15 minutes of fame, most of the time without doing something significant or working/creating something that will leave a mark and be part of the music industry and/or music.

Trying to stay in the music part of things, there are a few people that are doing their job the way it should be: with passion, vision, hard work. Most of the time, they already know their abilities and are aware of their talent in specific things, so they're not look like fools. Or they just don't care what you're saying.

You can easily spot them because others will talk about them. Most of the times, when someone is doing exactly what needs to be done (correctly and professionally + passionate and true, to his music/art) there will always be the people that can't do anything alike, so they're going only to "star" in social media while others will star in real life. A post on Facebook, in a forum or whatever, will be forgotten very soon, just like footprints in the beach. However, a successful work of art will always remain and all the people involved (musicians, producers, labels) will have a huge or small part to share about it. No matter if there's also commercial success or just artistic.

The iconic bands and musicians that brought heavy metal to that point of today, will soon be gone or they're already "gone" but can't do anything else. Don't get me wrong, I have the highest respect for all those and I can't imagine heavy metal without Judas Priest or Saxon, but just like Black Sabbath or Motörhead, soon they will all stop, so we must think about the future without them... It is just that most of them don't know when to stop or they just CAN'T stop because they don't know what else to do. This is their life, don't forget that.

So, underneath all those names, there are a few "new" musicians/people that most of the time are focused on their music and job. They're already here, a few of them from the late '00s, and a few of them are already part of great albums that during the new, digital era didn't all of them get the proper attention. After all, even if Rising, Heaven and Hell, Diary of a Madman, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus or Operation: Mindcrime would be released in 2020, there would be people saying "naaah", "mediocre", or a few of them would just pass by with a quick listen on YouTube. But wait... In the new, digital era, there are already people and fans in heavy metal music that think those albums might be "mediocre" or "bad" according to the "matter of taste".

So finally, there is probably a "matter of taste" if someone can't understand the importance of a few albums and musicians of the history of heavy metal. With that in mind, I don't expect everyone to agree, but Crystal Logic will present you 10 (+10) "new" musicians that are already on the frontline, and a few of them are going to be more important in the near future. They're already here.

The future belongs to the brave.

                                                                                                    written by Andreas Andreou

1. Arthur Rizk
Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer/audio engineer.
Related acts: Eternal Champion, Sumerlands.

Probably the hottest "new" name out there, with already one modern classic album under his belt (Eternal Champion's The Armor of Ire), the second Eternal Champion album Ravening Iron completed and on the way to immortality shortly, and having already offered in just a few years, producer/audio engineer/mastering duties to bands like Sacred Reich, Cavalera Conspiracy, Cro-Mags, Crypt Sermon, Power Trip, Smoulder, Tomb Mold, and Cirith Ungol among others, plus the bands he's playing with, of course: Eternal Champion and Sumerlands.
Speaking of Sumerlands, the debut same-titled album that brought in the new millennium the Jake E. Lee Ozzy-era with the underground all-father icon Phil Swanson on vocals, is one of the best heavy metal releases of the previous decade and Arthur is already working on the follow-up.

Starting from the depths of the late '00s US crossover scene with War Hungry, Arthur Rizk evolved to an all-around metal musician and producer with a strong influence in the wider US underground metal scene, and his studio in Pennsylvania is going to have a leading role in the years to come, let alone his presence in Eternal Champion and Sumerlands.
Arthur Rizk is the definition of "the future belongs to the brave". There is no luck here, just pure talent and hard work.

Next in Line: Olof Wikstrand
Singer, guitarist, songwriter, producer/audio engineer.
Related acts: Enforcer.

Starting with Enforcer in the mid '00s, it was 2008 the year when the debut album Into the Night was released just to be followed by Diamonds two years later. At that time, Enforcer was the absolute hyped traditional heavy metal newcomer, something they also proved with their live shows. But truth to be told, even if they are labeled as "one of the leading forces of New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal", even if we're using that term too, I can't really tell how valid the term is. More albums and live shows followed and Olof Wikstrand became a solid member of the (underground) metal scene, offering also mixing, mastering, audio engineering or producing duties in a few highlights of the previous decade, including releases from bands like Manacle and Tribulation. Olof is not exactly like most of the other musicians presented herein (or the long prologue), since he is very active (or "complaining", if you prefer) on social media, and someone might add that Enforcer "already did what they could do". I don't think so.

2. Gabriel Franco
Singer, guitarist, bassist, songwriter.
Related acts: Idle Hands.

One of the most talented musicians of today, is a youngster that has a specific "one-way" vision in his mind: commercial and artistic success with his new band, Idle Hands. Previously a member of Spellcaster, he was on the right way but other forces within the band led them to nothingness, so at that point, Gabriel decided that it would be his way, only. With Idle Hands and the best possible members he could get, their 2019 debut album Mana (that followed the EP Don't Waste Your Time) was one of the best releases of that year; maybe of the decade too.

Playing more live shows than almost any other band with musicians of his age during 2019, he ended supporting the US tour of King Diamond, performing the "heavy metal-meets-gothic and everything in-between" bittersweet music in front of a wider audience and gaining more attention. The quarantine months during the COVID-19 outbreak, besides the negative impact on the music industry, was probably a good opportunity for Gabriel Franco to plan his future with Idle Hands, check closely the label offers he has and of course, write a few more songs that we're going to sing in the years to come.

Next in Line: Jeff Black
Guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter.
Related acts: Gatekeeper.

It took a few years to the Canadian epic heavy metal armada of Gatekeeper to establish a recording and touring line-up but up to that point, they already had established their name in the underground epic metal scene, so they only needed a full-album to move to the next step. That next step was reached in 2018 with the release of their debut album East of Sun. Jeff Black (also known as Geoff Blackwell) is the driving force behind Gatekeeper and with the right people next to him, he is going to release the best Gatekeeper album in the years to come. We will probably see him also performing more dungeon synth.

3. Jarvis Leatherby
Singer, bassist, songwriter, promoter, manager.
Related acts: Night Demon, Cirith Ungol.

That dude owns the game. The leather boy from Ventura, California, formed Night Demon two decades after the last show of Cirith Ungol in his hometown and he managed to bring the entity known as Cirith Ungol back from the depths of time.

After the Night Demon same-titled EP in 2012, it took Jarvis and Co. a few more time in order to present a more than excellent full-album in 2015 under the name Curse of the Damned and an equally awesome follow-up in 2017 named Darkness Remains. Just like the Swedish force of power (Enforcer), Night Demon ruled the stage and that was an important element for their success and how fast they spread their name touring worldwide. That raw live power can be found in the Live Darkness live album but I am sure that most of the readers have already seen them somewhere. Night Demon played almost everywhere!

But Jarvis is something more than a "bass player who sings". He is also the organizer of Frost and Fire festival that takes place in his hometown, he is a super fan of NWOBHM and also holds the mic for Jaguar, he is the man behind the Cirith Ungol reunion and he finally took the bass role in the legendary American band. Additionally, he also started Iron Grip management, currently working with Cirith Ungol, Visigoth, Midnight and Satan. That's a lot of work, don't you think?
Music is the life of Jarvis Leatherby and he is an important part of the heavy metal scene nowadays. And I believe that there's more to come besides more Night Demon albums...

Next in line: Sarah Ann Kitteringham
Vocals, journalism, vlog, swords.
Related acts: Smoulder.

Based in Canada, Sarah Ann is fronting Smoulder that released Times of Obscene Evil and Wild Daring album in 2019, a strong album combining the best elements of classic epic heavy metal and doom metal legends. Smoulder are going to keep us hot in the future but you're going to read and see more about Sarah Ann in Decibel and BangerTV. Smoulder also include a few extraordinary gentlemen like Shawn Vincent and Collin Wolf, names you're also going to see a lot of times in the future of underground metal.

4. Jason Tarpey
Singer, author, hammer & anvil.
Related acts: Eternal Champion, Iron Age, Graven Rite.

I keep saying that you don't have to be a Geoff Tate singer in every band. There are bands that need a "specific" voice in their songs, a voice that fits perfectly and it is used as an instrument. When Jason was a boy, he was deeply into fantasy, reading Conan comic books and watching similar films, like Conan the Barbarian, Krull and Beastmaster. Later, he was introduced in H.P. Lovecraft and his circle, while he also discovered Manilla Road. When he joined Iron Age, a crossover band in Austin, Texas, he brought similar lyrics creating the iconic underground album The Sleeping Eye. His voice was perfect for Iron Age but later he decided to form an epic heavy metal band with clean singing. In the beginning there was Graven Rite and then Eternal Champion. When Eternal Champion released The Armor of Ire in 2016, it was an instant classic and it was more than obvious that this band was going to dominate the underground metal scene, and so it happened. Four years later, Jason Tarpey has a successful business an a blacksmith artist hand-forging steel and ironwork in the Texas hill country (Hammerhall Forge), he is writing about sword & sorcery and he sings songs you won't forget in the upcoming Eternal Champion album, Ravening Iron. With the most suitable voice you need, singing in a way that makes you repeat his every word and line.

Next in Line: Brendan Radigan
Singer, multi-instrumentalist.
Related acts: Magic Circle, Stone Dagger, Pagan Altar.

Brendan Radigan is a very special case. A person with a huge background in many diverse bands from hardcore and crossover to black metal, and from doom metal to epic heavy metal. And while he is currently the lead singer of Pagan Altar, the moment when Stone Dagger's debut album will be released, the world of underground metal will be shocked.

5. Cale Savy
Guitarist, singer, songwriter.
Related acts: Riot City.

When I first listened to the Livin' Fast demo of 2014, I knew that Riot City is going to be the energetic heavy metal band that will rule in the years to come. When the debut album Burn the Night was released in 2019, their screaming heavy metal was a shock. Judas Priest, spikes and leather! Riot City offered an amalgam of ripping and hot heavy metal, created in pure and youthful madness. Cale's vocals in Burn the Night are over the top but he stepped out of the mic for the coming tour and the next album, while he kept delivering energetic and powerful guitar mayhem. The next album is (probably) going to be released in 2021 and we expect nothing less than pure over-the-top heavy metal.

Next in Line: Jean-Pierre Abboud
Singer, metal enthusiast.
Related acts: Traveler, Gatekeeper.

JP Abboud started as the singer of Borrowed Time but probably the underground metal scene wasn't ready for them... Thankfully, Jeff Black in Gatekeeper and Matt Ries in Traveler didn't leave his amazing voice gone by so he is recording and touring with both of them while he is also part of Syrinx. JP is here to stay and we're going to listen many times to his awesome mid-range voice screaming stuff like "when the blade of Cimmeria drinks the life from their veins" and "the street machine can't fight back the winter".

6. Sebastian Silva
Guitarist.
Related acts: Idle Hands, Silver Talon, Cobra Spell.

Talent. You always need to have passion and skills, you always must practice but talent is what's making the difference. Sebastian Silva has plenty of it as a guitarist. He had joined many bands like Spellcaster, Leathürbitch and Silver Talon, but Idle Hands is the band that's making the difference. Sebastian "Spyder" Silva toured all over the world with Idle Hands and I've seen them twice, in a huge venue (festival) and also in a small club with 100 people. They delivered the goods both times and Sebastian is a great guitarist with a perfect stage presence. During the COVID-19 year, Sebastian also formed a band with...

Next in line: Sonia Anubis (Sonia Nusselder)
Guitar, YouTube, Instagram.
Related Acts: Burning Witches, Crypta, Cobra Spell.

Born 50 years after the birthday of Alice Cooper, it was the summer of 2019 where Sonia and Sebastian Silva of Idle Hands decided to form a band together. When the guitar duo met Alice Cooper, he advised them to follow their dreams of making music together, so they formed Cobra Spell! Sonia has a strong presence in social media and she was a member of Burning Witches but Cobra Spell sound as the ideal band for her, influenced by the golden era of the '80s and bands like Dokken, with hook-driven songs and guitar extravaganza. Cobra Spell will release later this year their debut EP, Love Venom.

7. Chris Black
Multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, record label owner, "heavy metal is the law".
Related acts: High Spirits, Dawnbringer, Aktor, Pharaoh, Professor Black.

Chris Black from Chicago, Illinois, is older than most of the musicians presented herein, but he is still young; actually one year younger than the author of this blog. However, his discography is unbelievable and impossible for many. This guy is a writing machine that sometime in the mid '90s he formed Dawnbringer releasing albums like In Sickness and in Dreams, Nucleus, In the Lair of the Sun God and Night of the Hammer among others, he formed Pharaoh performing drum duties and writing also a few songs for them, and then he also formed High Spirits that this year released a new album (Hard to Stop) mixed by Dan Swanö whom Chris met during his visit in Sweden in order to locate people and places that would be included in his upcoming book about Quorthon and Bathory!

But this is not just that. Chris is also running Planet Metal record label having released stuff from Bible of the Devil, Quicksand Dream, Züül and more, and he is also running more bands like Aktor, MetalUSAfer and Professor Black. And there are even more! This guy is a legend and he will never stop because heavy metal is the law.

Next in Line: Chad Davis
Singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter.
Related acts: Hour of 13, The Sabbathian.

Still older than most of the others herein, I just can't imagine writing an article like this one without including Chris Black and Chad Davis. I don't know what the future will hold for Chad, but he is an iconic underground metal songwriter, mostly exploring the dark side of things. Anu, Mountain of Judgement, Seven Foot Spleen, Olde, The Sabbathian, The Ritualist, Set, Profane Grace, and of course Hour of 13 (now using the Hour of Thirteen name) which their same-titled album of 2007 is one of the best albums of the '00s. This year, Chad is back with The Crooked Whispers and Satanic Melodies.

8. Trevor William Church
Singer, guitarist, bassist, record label owner.
Related acts: Haunt, Beastmaker.

Trevor was born into music. His father, his uncle and other members of his family were known musicians performing with known bands and artists like Montrose, Sammy Hagar and Van Morrison, just to name a few. His family, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne are just a few notable influences but it seemed that he would be involved with music no matter what. Based in Fresno, California, his first great stuff was released with Beastmaker recording countless songs and in 2017 he formed Haunt, one of the leading traditional heavy metal bands at the moment, with already a few awesome albums while in the beginning of 2020 they released Mind Freeze and before the year will end, another album is already out, Flashback! At the same time, Trevor is running Church Recordings, releasing now his own music and also gathering a few cool newcomers like Hysteria and Saber, other acts we're going to have in mind for the next few years.

Next in Line: Marios Petropoulos
Guitarist, songwriter.
Related acts: Sacral Rage.

There aren't many bands playing that perfect technical heavy speed metal of Sacral Rage. Actually, maybe there isn't any at the moment performing something so damn cool and metal as a mix of bands like Helstar, WatchTower, Annihilator, adding a few Mercyful Fate/King Diamond elements and the brain of Rush. Marios has that excellent guitar talent and no matter if the next album of Sacral Rage will meet commercial success, it will be an artistic mountain with a top unreachable by many.

9. Will Fried (known as The Hermit, Ol' Rusty, Will Spectre)
Singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter.
Related acts: Tarot, The Wizar'd.

Born in the golden year of 1988, Will is also the owner of Heavy Chains Records and that was my first contact with him sometime in 2014. He had already released The Wizar'd albums but didn't know that he was also Ol' Rusty, at least not before Tarot's The Warrior's Spell fell into my hands. In the marvellous year of 2016, the year of Agatus' The Eternalist, Eternal Champion's The Armor of Ire, Sumerlands' same-titled album, Khemmis' Hunted and The Temple's Forevermourn, Tarot released Reflections that was made of dreams, eerie landscapes and poetry. This year, The Wizar'd returned with their arcane metal and the album Subterranean Exile, and we're also waiting for Tarot's return...

Next in Line: Tucker Thomasson
Singing, lifting, playing guitar and Dungeons & Dragons.
Related acts: Throne of Iron.

The dude. Throne of Iron's debut album Adventure One is one of the most enjoyable albums of 2020 including every cliché we love and even more. There are better albums released in 2020, I know, but we can't resist a call to adventure and we're looking forward for more of them. As for the video of "Lichspire", that's definitely the best of 2020:

10. Colin Hendra
Singer, guitarist, songwriter, artist.
Related acts: Wytch Hazel.

When the Sarlacc's CD version of The Truth fell in my hands back in 2014, little I knew that this was going to be such a great band. Wytch Hazel's evolution is simply amazing and Colin Hendra is fully aware of this. Starting with Prelude in 2016 and with II: Sojourn in 2018, the British band established a strong name in the scene delivering a beautiful blend of classic heavy metal and hard rock rooted in '70s inspired by bands like Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath of course. Wytch Hazel's music is dominated by melodies, acoustic parts, great songwriting and a heartful performance, having also a Christian vibe. In 2020 the band will deliver the third full-album III: Pentecost and the mystical aura is now combined with a rich, sumptuous, anthemic late-night drivetime vibe, passionately embracing the most high-end smash-hit classic rock and metal of late '70s.

"Music is created for all, it’s a common grace for everyone" Colin said, "which is why the music that shows the glory of God the most, in my opinion, is not music created by Christians. It’s Black Sabbath!" You have to love them!

Next in Line: Joseph Tholl
Singer, guitarist, bassist, songwriter.
Related acts: VOJD, Black Trip, Enforcer.

Enforcer was a major step for Joseph but somewhere between, the two Black Trip albums was something bigger for him. In 2016, Black Trip changed its name to VOJD and released The Outer Ocean in 2018 without meeting the same success. Last year, Joseph released his solo album Devil's Drum and we're going to expect even more from him and VOJD. Or any other band he's going to be in.

This article is dedicated to the memory of Riley Gale of Power Trip.

Δευτέρα 21 Ιανουαρίου 2019

The albums we enjoyed most in 2018... and beyond.

The usual prologue would be that no one can say that have listened to almost everything that was released during 2018. Everyone who claims that, and posting the "best" and "top" lists is wrong so we will speak just for our favorite releases and the albums we enjoyed most in 2018. 2018 was more interesting than 2017 and we hope that 2019 will be better.  Also, you need to check the physical format to have the complete experience of an album, and not just have a quick listen on social networks, downloads or whatever. We are posting later than most media and websites our list, because there were so many great albums released during December and we needed to have a proper listening and buy some of them.

1. JUDAS PRIEST "Firepower"
(Columbia - Sony Music)

What a comeback! Probably the best Priest album after "Painkiller" and an album that some people loved to hate. But don't bother, there are many other great albums out there to love and Rob Halford is cool enough not to worry about your hate. "Firepower" sums up nearly everything Priest means in terms of songwriting and Richie Faulkner has his share on the album. Songs like "Rising from Ruins" will be future classics, while "No Surrender" is an addictive heavy metal hit.

Legends: SAXON's "Thunderbolt" is great. It is a regular Saxon album, meaning an album that sounds like thunder. Biff and Co. cannot fail. U.D.O. returned with "Steelfactory" and overshadowed  the last Accept album. His last tour playing Accept classics was refreshing and we loved that album. Plus, we always support ideas like the one behind the song "One Heart One Soul".

Check also: MAGNUM "Lost on the Road to Eternity", MICHAEL SCHENKER FEST "Resurrection", URIAH HEEP "Living the Dream".

2. SOLSTICE "White Horse Hill"
(Invictus - Dark Descent - Iron Bonehead)

Loud Epic Heavy Metal. Outsiders and unbound, Rich Walker and Co. follow their path against the odds. Too loud for soft ears, to epic to pass by.

Sword-swingin' heavy metal: GATEKEEPER's first full-length album "East of Sun" is finally here and the Canadian sword wielders have finally a strong line-up ready to lead the battle. Kenny Powell's OMEN are "Alive"! A new singer and two new songs in the vein of the glorious past. VISIGOTH's "Conqueror's Oath" was massive and they are a leading force of a new epic heavy metal movement.

Check also: BATTLEROAR "Codex Epicus", LETHEAN "The Waters of Death", SMOULDER "The Sword Woman".

3. SABOTER "Architects of Evil"
(No Remorse Records)

Sinister Ultra Metal! SABOTERʼs new album is an aural horror of merciless sinister Metal. The music of "Architects of Evil" is a blend of pure Heavy Metal with epic, power and tech thrash elements that will fit in the taste of a variety of Metal fans who worship bands from Manowar, Judas Priest, old-Iced Earth and beyond. Just check "The Temple of R'lyeh" and the epicness of "To Glory We March" and don't miss the chance to catch them live.

Check also: BLACK CYCLONE "Death is King", BLACK VIPER "Hellions of Death", CARRIAGE "Visions", IRONFLAME "Tales of Splendor and Sorrow", LUCIFER'S HAMMER "Time Is Death", SABATEUR "Vicious Circle", VERMITHRAX "Imperium Draconus".

4. SACRAL RAGE "Beyond Celestial Echoes"
(Cruz Del Sur)

Insane! Progressive and tech speed metal lunacy influenced by Annihilator, Mercyful Fate, Watchtower and sci-fi visions. Sacral Rage is probably the best band of its kind for 2018 and "Beyond Celestial Echoes" an ultra-metal brainstorm.

Check also: ARTILLERY "The Face of Fear", METAL CHURCH "Damned If You Do", SEPTAGON "Apocalyptic Rhymes", VOIVOD "The Wake".

5. DAWN OF WINTER "Pray for Doom"
(I Hate)

(True) Doom Metal is weird. (True) Doom Metal is the soul of Metal. You can call many things "doom" and we put this label to many bands and albums, but truth to be told, (true) Doom Metal is the purest form of metal. But what is true Doom Metal? Let's just say that for 2018, Dawn of Winter's album is the essence of true Doom Metal. Now that you've read so many times true and doom, you probably know the meaning. (True) Doom Metal has to be regressive and "Pray for Doom" is the best Doom Metal album of 2018. We love Doom Metal and we listen to many bands inspired by the Riff Lord (Iommi) and the Doomfather (Edling) but only few of them are within the borders of despair. We pray for them.

Doom or be Doomed: EVANGELIST released "Deus Vult" in the last days of 2018, MIRROR OF DECEPTION with "The Estuary" mark the second great return after Dawn of Winter and LORD VIGO with "Six Must Die" is the third band from Germany that deserves to walk in the darkness and gets an extra credit for the concept inspired by John Carpenter's film, "The Fog".

Check also: ACOLYTES OF MOROS "The Wellspring", DAUTHA "Brethren of the Black Soil", IRON VOID "Excalibur", SOLEMN CEREMONY "Solemn Ceremony".

6. HEIR APPARENT "The View From Below"
(No Remorse Records)

Nearly 30 years after their second album, Heir Apparent return with another different record. The band has a general philosophy about mankind being the guardian of the planet, and the importance of rising above cultural delusions and inequality, and these are things that can be found in the lyrics of "The View From Below". We miss good lyrics in modern metal, and Heir Apparent's view on progressive metal, is inspired and intelligent. We need more bands like Heir Apparent.

Prog Visions, Power Vibes: CONCEPTION's "My Dark Symphony" is the natural evolution after "Flow" and we are waiting to see the next step since there seems to be a grey zone regarding the album's distribution and how Conception are promoted. Emotional and inspired, "My Dark Symphony" may heal the bloody wounds that never bleed. "Divine Intermission" is the debut full-length album of OPEN BURN, a new progressive power metal band from USA, featuring three members of the legendary US metal band Lethal and their classic era of the "Programmed" album. If you love this style, this album is highly recommended.

Check also: HAKEN "Vector", LEVIATHAN "Can't be Seen by Looking: Blurring the Lines, Clouding the Truth", RIVERSIDE "Wasteland", WITHERFALL "A Prelude to Sorrow"

7. MANACLE "No Fear to Persevere"
(No Remorse Records)

The astonishing debut album of Manacle from Canada is highly recommended for fans of Judas Priest, Savage Grace, Agent Steel and early-Omen. Professional production, to-the-point songwriting and passionate performance. A deadly debut album that you must listen (and worship) if you love real heavy metal.

Blades of Steel: British legends SATAN returned with "Cruel Magic" and deliver for third time after the reunion everything we love in classic heavy metal. Power, passion, the voice of Brian Ross and the most underrated metal guitar duo.

Check also: ARIA "Curse of the Seas", OLD WOLF "Faustian Mass".

8. KHEMMIS "Desolation"
(20 Buck Spin - Nuclear Blast)

In the second interview I've done with Khemmis for Iron Fist magazine, I mentioned to Ben Hutcherson (guitars/vocals) that Khemmis sound like ZZ Top meet Thin Lizzy and jamming on doom metal. He loved it! You can't describe easily "Desolation"; it is doomed heavy metal, doomed rock 'n' roll or just great solid heavy music. "Isolation" is the harmonized doom hit you have to love.

Into the Void: KING WITCH "Under the Mountain". Heavy Doom from UK with female vocals. It has to be great. And it is great.

Goddess on Heavy / Doom: CASTLE "Deal Thy Fate", HAUNTED "Dayburner", HOLY GROVE "II", LOWEN "A Crypt in the Stars", MANSION "First Death of the Lutheran", WINDHAND "Eternal Return", WITCH MOUNTAIN "Witch Mountain".

WOLFTOOTH from Richmond, Indiana, United States, obey The Riff, if you know what I mean. Their same-titled debut album is too groovy for the regressive doom metal fan, too epic for the stoner fan, too awesome for the rest. And speaking of awesomeness, the track "Sword of My Father" is one of the most addictive songs of 2018.

Check also: BLACK OATH "Behold the Abyss", FIRE DOWN BELOW "Hymn of the Cosmic Man", GOAT EXPLOSION "Rumors of Man", RIPIS "Shadow Dies in Morning Light".

9. PROFESSOR BLACK "Sunrise"
(High Roller)

Chris Black is one of the most talented and productive artists out there. In 2018 he released three (!) albums, one EP and one split, everything different from each other! He is also behind bands like High Spirits, Aktor, Superchrist, he was the leading force behind Dawnbringer and also member of Pharaoh. "Sunrise" might considered as a tribute to the legacy of Quorthon and Bathory and that comes from a real fan, since Chris is also working on a book about Bathory. "Sunrise" is probably the best Bathory-inspired album since the first two albums of Ereb Altor.

The Kodex of the Olde: Most likely, IDLE HANDS will soon escape from underground and you will hear about them in any way. "Don't Waste Your Time" is the first official release of those lads, based in Portland, Oregon, United States. Youngsters but not unknown, since in this line-up you have ex-Spellcaster, Leathürbitch and Silver Talon members. Five songs in a unique style that combines bands like The Mission, Sisters of Mercy, In Solitude and Judas Priest, everything with a heavy metal production and approach. WYTCH HAZEL from UK deliver a unique blend of classic heavy metal and hard rock rooted in '70s and bands like Wishbone Ash and Thin Lizzy. "II: Sojourn" is the second full-length album and it is dominated by beautiful melodies, acoustic parts, great songwriting and heartful performance.

Check also: IN THE WOODS... "Cease the Day", NECROMANT "The Necromant Lives", PRIMORDIAL "Exile Amongst the Ruins", SUMMONING "With Doom We Come".

10. FIFTH ANGEL "The Third Secret"
(Nuclear Blast)

Besides Heir Apparent, Fifth Angel is the next band from Seattle that returns after nearly thirty years. Kendall Bechtel handles guitars and lead vocals and Ken Mary is also back in the drum kit. Classic US heavy power metal with many memorable songs like "Stars Are Falling", "We Will Rise", "Queen of Thieves" and "This Is War". We need more comebacks like this one!

Angels (and Demons) in Leather: MIKE LEPOND'S SILENT ASSASSINS returned with "Pawn and Prophecy" and you have to love the second collaboration of Mike LePond and Alan Tecchio. STONEWALL from Italy released the second album "Never Fall" and if you didn’t know that these guys come from the land of Roberto Baggio, you could believe that this is a lost '80s Heavy / Power Metal album (with lot of melodic parts) from United States. Highly recommended for fans of bands like Fifth Angel, Stonewall's new album might sound closer to the '80s Fifth Angel sound than the great 2018 Fifth Angel album, "The Third Secret"... SNAKEBITE from Germany released "Rise of the Snake" and it's all about freedom and hard-rockin' attitude, all the way to the top. Or more precisely, to the underground smoke filled club, where a tune like "One Touch" would be a proper song for Tawny Kitaen to approach the stage.

Check also: WARREL DANE "Shadow Work", LEATHER "II", DEE SNIDER "For the Love of Metal"

Are you disappointed? It makes no sense to write random "bad" albums οf 2018, so let's remain to bands and artists we love and just say that we wanted something more or something different from DORO ("Forever Warriors, Forever United"), GRAVE DIGGER ("The Living Dead"), KAMELOT ("The Shadow Theory"), LIZZY BORDEN ("My Midnight Things"), RIOT V ("Armor of Light"), THERION ("Beloved Antichrist") and VENOM ("Storm the Gates").

LIZZY BORDEN does his (new) thing and there are some very interesting moments on the album but in the end of the day, it sounds more as a side-project of the artist and not an album of the band we knew. On the other hand, RIOT V keep the tradition but they copy themselves in a very awkward way that lacks of inspiration.

The Best, the Rest and More - 2018 Unmasked

A kind of review for 2018, including everything we listened to. Some of the albums that follow are really great and few of them can end in "Top-20" lists. Others, are just good or nearly good but have some elements that make them important for a specific audience. We haven't include albums we consider "bad" and of course, there are always albums that we "lost" of just didn't listen. No one can listen or catch everything. Ghosts, demons and chains that bound the media:

GHOST's "Prequelle" is an album that dominated media. A diverse album including songs like "Rats" with the '80s Ozzy-Jake E Lee guitar vibe, the melodic AOR dancing "Dance Macabre", the prog rock "Pro Memoria" and everything in-between. It is pop(ular), mainstream, artistic and successful. Speaking of "successful", GRETA VAN FLEET's "Anthem of the Peaceful Army" was a major rock hit. Most likely, this Led Zeppelin-inspired rock and this band will be the next big thing in rock music, and it seems that "retro" can become mainstream and hyped. BEHEMOTH "I Loved You at Your Darkest" was also a successful release that got huge coverage from the press, while ALICE IN CHAINS's "Rainier Fog" was another return many people were looking for.

Check also: AMORPHIS "Queen of Time", AT THE GATES "To Drink from the Night Itself", BLACK LABEL SOCIETY "Grimmest Hits", BULLET "Dust to Gold", CHAPEL OF DISEASE "...and as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye", CLUTCH "Book of Bad Decisions", CORROSION OF CONFORMITY "No Cross No Crown", DISTURBED "Evolution", IHSAHN "Amr", MYLES KENNEDY "Year of the Tiger", MANTAR "The Modern Art of Setting Ablaze", MEMORIAM "The Silent Vigil", MONSTER MAGNET "Mindfucker", OBSCURA "Diluvium", THE OCEAN "Phanerozoic I: Paleozoic", ORPHANED LAND "Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs", RIVERS OF NIHIL "Where Owls Know My Name", SOULFLY "Ritual", TREMONTI "A Dying Machine", TRIBULATION "Down Below", ZEAL & ARDOR "Stranger Fruit"

What do we expect from 2019?

We already have listened to few of the upcoming releases, and we can tell that TRAVELER ("Traveler") and SANHEDRIN ("The Poisoner") are coming your way with great albums. It also seems that we will have an epic heavy metal revival in 2019 and during March, TWISTED TOWER DIRE return with "Wars In The Unknown" and there are also new bands like THRONE OF IRON that might surprise us with their first album. GATEKEEPER are also here, IRONSWORD and RAVENSIRE are in the studio, OMEN will record new songs to follow "Alive" EP and there are more tales of swords to come including more "mainstream" bands like GRAND MAGUS.

The bands we knew as "New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal" seem to add more melody in their music and that wave of early-Maiden and NWOBHM-inspired bands *maybe* will sound slightly different from now and on. With ENFORCER having the new album ready and expected shortly, a new era might rise for those bands and don't be surprised if you will listen to an additional influence from classic bands like EUROPE in this NWOTHM. Part of that wave will also be new bands like RIOT CITY from Canada, and Canadian metal will rise in the following months/years.

We are still waiting for an update from SAVIOUR MACHINE, CANDLEMASS will find their audience with "The Door to Doom", legendary BIFF BYFORD of SAXON will release his first solo album, TANITH (featuring Russ Tippins of SATAN) joined Metal Blade Records and KING DIAMOND confirmed that he will enter studio for the long-awaited comeback album, that will be part of a trilogy.

Have a great and healthy 2019, never surrender and praise Iommi.
